{"id":127849,"date":"2020-12-07T01:42:39","date_gmt":"2020-12-06T22:42:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/anti-nyc-development-activists-set-sights-on-this-new-target\/"},"modified":"2020-12-07T01:42:39","modified_gmt":"2020-12-06T22:42:39","slug":"anti-nyc-development-activists-set-sights-on-this-new-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/anti-nyc-development-activists-set-sights-on-this-new-target\/","title":{"rendered":"#Anti-NYC development activists set sights on this new target"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Anti-NYC development activists set sights on this new target<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The next battle between Big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le builders and anti-development activists is set over sprawling plans to redevelop Queens\u2019s Flushing waterfront with new towers that would bring apartments, office space and hotel rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive activists like those who helped sink plans to reuse Brooklyn\u2019s Industry City and Amazon\u2019s second headquarters in Queens\u2019s Long Island City are gearing up to fight the plan to bring as many as 13 hi-rises to an 11-block area that\u2019s currently home to a U-Haul storage facility and parking lots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was always a practice where, in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, if the local Council member supported it, his or her colleagues would get on board. What we are seeing now is there is so much pressure, whether it\u2019s from the left or the right, the local Council member is not looked at and there are other forces coming into communities and saying, \u2018Well this is not good,\u2019 \u201d said Carlo Scissura, president of the New York Building Congress, lamenting he\u2019s been seeing \u201ca lot of NIMBYism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think clearly they are listening to only a certain section of the electorate,\u201d he said of local politicians. \u201cWhen the voices of only a narrow group are looked at, you\u2019re going to continue to see things like Flushing, Industry City and Amazon fall apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those dozen-plus towers that developers hope to build would be home to 1,700 apartments, nearly 900 hotel rooms and 700,000 square feet of commercial space.<\/p>\n<p>The City Planning Commission has already given the project the thumbs up \u2014 and so has the local community board.<\/p>\n<p>But a key City Council committee vote, originally set for Nov. 18, was postponed until Monday, as progressives turned up the pressure to nix the project.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"A rendering of the Flushing Creek\" class=\"wp-image-16754679 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/flushing-waterfront-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/flushing-waterfront-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/flushing-waterfront-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/flushing-waterfront-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/flushing-waterfront-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>A rendering of Flushing Creek<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Jeff Stikeman Architectual Art<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day before the postponement a group of Council members \u2014 many of whom are eyeing Democratic primary contests in 2021 or 2022, where left-wing activists have played a decisive role in recent contests \u2014 said they were \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the developers\u2019 plans.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that the developers \u2014 F&amp;T Group, Young Nian Group and United Construction &amp; Development Group \u2014 need to offer local residents more.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the project would set aside 61 of the proposed 1,600 apartments for rent-regulation, clean up nearby Flushing Creek and construct a 40-foot-wide esplanade to open the waterfront to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt ignores the real, urgent needs of the Flushing community,\u201d read the statement, signed by more than 10 members of the Council. \u201cWe believe it would be irresponsible to approve the application without deep community benefits like real affordable housing and commitment to provide good jobs for local community members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The signees include newly-minted Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, who faces a likely primary challenge next year for the job from his former Council colleague, Jimmy Van Bramer, who has made a name for himself for his opposition to high profile projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are living in a time when we need to create jobs, we have a housing crisis \u2026 so I\u2019m all for growth,\u201d the real estate-backed pol recently told The Post. \u201cBut the challenge with this project as it stands is that this is not a project that is going to help communities grow.
