Hey, remember\u00a0Extraction<\/em><\/strong>? It\u2019s an utterly forgettable Netflix movie that got a lot of hype because it stars handsome man Chris Hemsworth<\/strong> and was produced by the Russo Brothers<\/strong> (Joe Russo<\/strong> also wrote it). Even though the action flick was pretty cut and dry and wrapp<\/a>ed up its story rather definitively, it did really well (Netflix claims it\u2019s their\u00a0most-watched original film\u00a0ever<\/em>) and a sequel is being developed. But that\u2019s not all. According to Joe Russo, the plan is to create an entire\u00a0Extraction<\/em> cinematic universe.<\/p>\n

Joe and Anthony Russo know a thing or two about cinematic universes. They were at the helm of several Marvel movies<\/a>, most notably the huge crossover events\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War<\/em> and\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/a><\/em>. But their cinematic universe plans don\u2019t stop at Marvel. In an interview with Collider<\/a>, Joe Russo revealed plans to turn\u00a0Extraction<\/em>\u00a0into a franchise. There\u2019s already one sequel in development, and when pressed for details on that, Joe Russo replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still not gonna commit because I think it\u2019s more exciting to surprise people, but I will say this: we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters. So if you\u2019re interested in David Harbour\u2019s character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In\u00a0Extraction<\/em>, Hemsworth\u2019s character Tyler Rake (yes, that\u2019s really his name) reconnects with an old Special Forces buddy named Gasper, played by David Harbour<\/strong>. It doesn\u2019t go so well \u2013 Gasper turns on Rake and the two get into a big fight. Now, it\u2019s time for some spoilers<\/strong>: Gasper ends up dead. And he\u2019s not alone there, because\u00a0Extraction<\/em> ends with Hemsworth\u2019s character also dying. He gets shot a bunch of times and falls into a river, where he stays \u2013 lifeless. We never actually see or hear anyone pronounce him dead, but it\u2019s pretty clear he\u2019s not long for this world. But based on what Joe Russo said above, they\u2019re going to get around that whole \u201cour lead character is dead\u201d thing by going a prequel route. And that might spiral out into\u00a0multiple<\/em> prequels involving other characters.<\/p>\n

Russo also added:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to find more interesting ways to tell these stories and cross-pollinate them. We\u2019re big fans of just forging new paths in narrative. Can we go backwards and forwards at the same time? Can things that happened in the past affect the movies in the present? What are new ways to tell those stories? And can we see different points of view? Every antagonist is the protagonist in their own story, so can we see their point of view? How do they perceive the world? What makes them empathetic? I think what makes that a compelling element to the Extraction<\/em> universe is it is a global franchise telling global stories, and we\u2019d like to diversify the point of view in those movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Again:\u00a0Extraction<\/em> was a big hit for Netflix. But is anyone out there really clamoring for an entire \u201cExtraction<\/em> universe\u201d? I guess we\u2019ll have to wait and see.
