\u201cThey\u2019re called the Bravest, not the Smartest,\u201d cracked one FDNY member, referring to firefighters who say they will refuse the COVID vaccine. Whatever the reason, that\u2019s the city\u2019s sworn protectors adding to the public\u2019s risks.<\/p>\n

As The Post\u2019s Sara Dorn reports, a poll found that 55 percent of FDNY firefighters say they\u2019ll skip the shot. First responders are to be offered the vaccine early on, but union boss Andrew Ansbro says some members \u201cdon\u2019t want to be on the front of the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

He notes that 35 percent were already exposed to the virus and thus think they don\u2019t need the shot. Wrong: They can still get reinfected \u2014 and so spread the bug.<\/p>\n

Firefighters aren\u2019t alone: Just 30 percent of MTA workers will definitely get the vaccine, a survey showed. Emergency Medical Service workers are skeptical, too, says their union\u2019s boss \u2014 which is app<\/a>alling.<\/p>\n

And nearly half of all city residents are hesitant, the Health Department found.<\/p>\n

This is at least partly the fruit of Gov. \u00adAndrew Cuo\u00admo and other Democrats cynically sowing doubt about any vaccine produced on President Trump\u2019s watch. Americans \u201cshould be skeptical,\u201d the gov said in October.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t just preposterous, suggesting respected scientists would fudge their standards for political reasons. It was also reckless, since it\u2019s key that at least 75 percent of people be inoculated to reach herd immunity. Monday, Cuomo admitted that figure \u201cis going to be very hard to reach.\u201d<\/p>\n

This risks a huge self-inflicted tragedy, prolonging the pandemic. Tests of tens of thousands show the vaccines are safe. So getting the shot is a low-risk way to protect others, as first responders do every day.<\/p>\n

The city needs every leader to stand up for vaccination \u2014 especially in vax-suspicious communities.<\/p>\n

Under Jewish law, Rabbi Avi Weiss wrote in The Post, \u201cif the science<\/a> says it\u2019s helpful to take the vaccine, we should do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to tell everybody, you\u2019re not getting the 666\u201d \u2014 the devil \u2014 from the vaccine, assured City Councilman Fernando Cabrera (D-Bx.) during services at the church where he serves as pastor.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s hope FDNY chaplains and leaders join in. The sooner we all get the shot, the sooner COVID becomes history.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
