“#Over 3,000 NYC eateries app<\/a>roved for outdoor dining as Phase 2 starts<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n More than 3,000 Big Apple eateries have applied and were approved to offer sidewalk and curbside seating under the second stage reopening that began Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio said as he noted that ridership on the city\u2019s subways and buses is up.<\/p>\n

Under New York City\u2019s Phase 2 of reopening from its three-month coronavirus shutdown, restaurants can open for outdoor dining only \u2014 and offices, in-store retail, hair salons and barbershops, real estate services, car dealerships, commercial building management, houses of worship and playgrounds can also reopen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reopening of our restaurants is such an important part of this day,\u201d de Blasio said during his daily City Hall press briefing Monday. \u201cThis is so much the identity of New York City\u2026we need them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Friday, de Blasio said, 3,192 restaurants applied with the city through its new online self-certification process and were \u201cinstantly qualified\u201d for curbside and sidewalk seating under the city\u2019s outdoor dining restaurant plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood to go today,\u201d Hizzoner said of the eateries. \u201cThat says something about how easy it will be for these key parts of our economy to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio told reporters that he and his wife, First Lady Chirlane McCray, \u201cabsolutely\u201d plan on taking advantage of dining out under Phase 2 later Monday at a to-be-determined location.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world of New York restaurants is very, very personally important to me,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m very excited this day has come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, signs of the Big Apple churning back to life are showing through increased ridership on public transportation.<\/p>\n

Subway ridership was up 29 percent on Thursday compared to earlier this month, while bus ridership was up 22 percent, ridership on the Staten Island Ferry was up 31 percent and traffic into Manhattan on the East River bridges and Harlem River bridges was up 24 percent and 10 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a lot more traffic. In fact I\u2019ve been struck, I\u2019ve experienced some traffic jams lately,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cIn a funny way it\u2019s reassuring to be in a traffic jam again.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio called Monday a \u201chistoric day,\u201d as the city rolled into Phase 2 and \u201cas the nation\u2019s largest city, the nation\u2019s largest economy gets back on its feet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Between 150,000 and 300,000 people will return to work in Phase 2, the mayor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHundreds of thousands of people will be going back to work today and there\u2019s a real excitement out there,\u201d he said, noting, \u201csome people are going to do it immedia<\/a>tely,\u201d while \u201cothers will take their time.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio predicted that there will be some \u201chesitation\u201d for office workers to return to work even though they\u2019re permitted to under Phase 2.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be stages,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the summer will be slower. I think the fall is when you\u2019re going to see much more ramp up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though the city is allowing for playgrounds to reopen under Phase 2, de Blasio said he is still evaluating when to reopen dog runs and sports facilities like basketball courts and soccer fields.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey all tend to have a lot of people congregating in a small space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Big Apple could enter Phase 3 of the state\u2019s four-phase reopening plan in early July as long as the health-related metrics are satisfied.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be based on the data and it\u2019s going to be, of course, based on a high bar because to do something here affects many millions of people,\u201d de Blasio said, adding, \u201cWe have to get it right.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
