Then<em> stop<\/em> putting your money where your mouth is.<\/p>\n<p>Literally \u2014 because environmentalists warn that humans may be consuming the equivalent of one credit card per week, or about 5 <sup>1<\/sup>\u20444 grams of plastic.<\/p>\n<p>A new study by the World Wildlife Federation International illustrates just how much plastic we are ingesting in our lifetimes, owing to the spread of plastic waste across the globe. Researchers say it\u2019s mainly creeping in via drinking water, but seafood has also become a major source, as marine life inadvertently consume bits of plastic that end up in our oceans \u2014 of which there are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 8 million metric tons, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanconservancy.org\/trash-free-seas\/plastics-in-the-ocean\/\">according to<\/a> the Ocean Conservancy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose plastic particles, if you like, are little time bombs waiting to break down small enough to be absorbed by wildlife or by people and then potentially have harmful consequences,\u201d said Malcolm Hudson, lead researcher into plastic pollution at the University of Southampton, who contributed to the WWF report. <\/p>\n<p>To illustrate the impact, the WWF calculated the average plastic consumption by humans over periods of time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One month = 21 grams, or one Lego brick<\/li>\n<li>Six months = 125 grams, enough to fill a cereal bowl<\/li>\n<li>One year = 250 grams, the size of a full dinner plate<\/li>\n<li>10 years = 5\u00a0\u00bd pounds (2.5 kg), about the weight of a life-saver ring buoy<\/li>\n<li>One lifetime = an estimated 40 pounds or more, the approximate weight of two plastic recycling dumpsters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"LEGO depicted like sushi\" class=\"wp-image-16766861 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/microplastics-study-illustration-3-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/microplastics-study-illustration-3-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/microplastics-study-illustration-3-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/microplastics-study-illustration-3-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/microplastics-study-illustration-3-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Kim Kyung-Hoon\/REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile we do swallow plastics in our food, we are mostly passing that through, and it may not be harming us,\u201d added Hudson in a video produced by the WWF International. <\/p>\n<p>Microplastics are defined as bits of plastic that measure 5 millimeters or smaller but can eventually break down into mere nanometers. \u201cAnd when we\u2019re down at the nanometer scale \u2014 we\u2019re talking about nanoparticles here \u2014 it is possible that they could be absorbed by our digestive systems and end up in our bodies.
