Harold Budd, the avant-garde ambient and minimalist composer, has died. His longtime collaborator Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins\u2014who released a new album with Budd last week called Another Flower<\/em><\/a>\u2014confirmed the news<\/a>. A cause of death has not been revealed. He was 84.<\/p>\n

Harold Budd was born in Los Angeles in 1936. He played the drums growing up and, after graduating high school, enrolled at Los Angeles City College, where he took a music theory course<\/a> in harmony<\/a>. Budd spent time in the army, playing in a band with Albert Ayler<\/a>, before studying under the composer Gerald Strang<\/a> at San Fernando Valley State College. As an undergraduate, John Cage delivered a speech, titled \u201cWhere Are We Going and What Are We Doing?,\u201d to Budd and his fellow students. Budd has often credited<\/a> Cage and the speech with changing how he thought about music.<\/p>\n

Budd later earned a graduate degree from the University of Southern California, where he worked with Ingolf Dahl. In 1970, Budd released his first recorded work, The Oak of the Golden Dreams<\/em><\/a>. Eight years later, he released his album The Pavilion of Dreams<\/em><\/a>, produced by Brian Eno. Budd continued to work with Eno, collaborating on 1980\u2019s Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror<\/em> and 1984\u2019s The Pearl<\/em>. Budd continued to compose and recorded throughout the 1980s, \u201990s, 2000s, and 2010s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harold Budd is often associated with the \u201csoft pedal\u201d style of playing the piano, an instrument that he did not learn play often until his thirties. \u201cI wrote a piece in 1972 called Madrigals of the Rose Angel<\/em>, and it was sent off for a public performance back East somewhere. I wasn\u2019t there, but I got the tape and I was absolutely app<\/a>alled at how they missed the whole idea,\u201d he recalled<\/a> in 2005. \u201cI told myself, \u2018This is never going to happen again. From now on, I take full charge of any piano playing.\u2019 That settled that.\u201d<\/p>\n
