Doctor: Deadly Foot-Dragging at the FDA <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFDA regulators are wasting precious time in greenlighting a COVID vaccine,\u201d Dr. Marty Makary argues at The Dispatch<\/a>, \u201cas more than 2,000 Americans are dying each day and the pandemic continues to starve American society.\u201d Pfizer sent in its vaccine data on Nov. 22, but \u201crather than immedia<\/a>tely convening experts, the FDA scheduled a review meeting on Dec. 10.\u201d Why the three-week wait? \u201cAs a Johns Hopkins scientist who has conducted more than 100 clinical studies and reviewed thousands more from the scientific community at large, I can assure you that the agency\u2019s review can be done within 24 to 48 hours without cutting any corners.\u201d And career staffers actually slowed down the process in October by requiring \u201cmore follow-up data for vaccine trials than they do for other drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Science<\/a> writer: Lockdowns = Self-Flagellation<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the Black Death ravaged Europe, \u201cpandemic control\u201d involved \u201cFlagellants\u201d who \u201cbeat and whipped their bare skin\u201d until \u201cblood rained down,\u201d recalls John Tierney at City Journal<\/a>. Today, their spirit \u201clives on,\u201d but instead of beatdowns, \u201cregulators favor lockdowns, which are less bloody but inflict more social pain.\u201d Officials rarely suggest getting some sun to build up Vitamin D or taking it as a supplement, though it\u2019s been shown to help fight viral infections. That\u2019s because it \u201centails no pain\u201d and \u201cprovides no glory\u201d to public officials. Gov. Cuomo takes credit for \u201ccontrolling\u201d COVID with his lockdown, though infections were declining before he imposed it. \u201cIf he\u2019d been leading the Flagellants,\u201d he would\u2019ve made the same boast, since the plague subsided soon after.<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Diversity in Looks Only<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nasdaq\u2019s proposed diversity mandate is more about \u201caesthetics\u201d than \u201cmeaningful change,\u201d declares Kat Rosenfield at Spectator USA<\/a>. The exchange wants \u201cmost Nasdaq-listed companies to have, or explain why they do not have, at least two diverse directors.\u201d But the \u201clack of diversity\u201d at the top \u201creflects problems with corporate culture and hiring practices that favor people from privileged backgrounds from entry level on up and squeeze out women and people of color long before they ever reach the executive suite.\u201d Without real change, such as hiring \u201cfrom more than just the usual handful of elite schools,\u201d the \u201cunderlying reasons for the white male hegemony will remain unaddressed, and the divide between the country\u2019s haves and have nots will stay as entrenched as ever.\u201d <\/p>\n

The pope typically \u201cweighs in on outrages wherever he finds them,\u201d but he\u2019s been silent on all things China since the Vatican\u2019s 2018 agreement with Beijing giving \u201cthe Communist state extraordinary say over the selection of Catholic bishops.\u201d Francis continues to \u201csee no evil in China\u201d while his \u201clack of encouragement\u201d amid protests and mass arrests leaves Beijing Catholics hopeless. The Vatican \u201cought to have the integrity to not shirk from acknowledging the price\u201d of its political decisions.<\/p>\n

From the left: Cultural App<\/a>ropriation, Please<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cArguments about cultural appropriation make the news<\/a> every month or two,\u201d but in \u201cthe world of fiction,\u201d remarks novelist Brian Morton at Dissent<\/a>, \u201cimagining other lives is part of the job.\u201d Artists do so \u201cby virtue of a common humanity,\u201d and though \u201cthe phrase seems quaint,\u201d the left must restore \u201cthe dignity and prestige of the idea.\u201d Cultural appropriation\u2019s critics seem \u201clike members of a weird purity cult, issuing edicts and prohibitions against the kinds of mixing that are an inevitable part of life,\u201d from \u201cthe meals we make to the music we enjoy to the language that I\u2019m using to write this.\u201d In fact, everyone should \u201ccultivate the sympathetic imagination\u201d while defending the \u201cright to offend, the right to satirize, even the right to get things wrong.\u201d Imagining \u201cthe lives of others is a crucial form of solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n
