Silicon Valley ain\u2019t booming like it used to be \u2014 and Elon Musk has gone to Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The eccentric tech tycoon, who in recent months has squabbled with California officials over coronavirus restrictions at Tesla\u2019s electric-car factory, confirmed that he recently moved to the Lone Star State \u2014 and he blames the move on California.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a team has been winning for too long, they do tend to get a little complacent, a little entitled and then they don\u2019t win the championship anymore,\u201d Musk said in\u00a0an interview<\/a>\u00a0with the Wall Street Journal. \u201cCalifornia has been winning for too long.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move comes less than six months after Tesla\u00a0announced\u00a0plans to build its next factory in the Austin area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk said that he has been planning to decamp from California for months. He publicly clashed with state officials who required Tesla\u2019s Fremont gigafactory to close during the first wave of the pandemic in the spring, calling the state\u2019s lockdowns \u201cfascist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Palo Alto-based Tesla went as far as to defy lockdown orders, with Musk effectively\u00a0daring local authorities to arrest him. The company also sued to block Alameda County from enforcing the order before officials\u00a0agreed to let the plant reopen\u00a0as long as it sufficiently protected workers from the virus.<\/p>\n

The animosity with California grew so intense that Musk threatened to move Tesla out of the state, to either Nevada or Texas. But in his interview Musk stressed that the move was personal, and that it did not mean he was taking Tesla with him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s worth noting that Tesla is the last car company still manufacturing cars in California,\u201d Musk said. \u201cThere used to be over a dozen car plants in California, and California used to be the center of aerospace manufacturing. My companies are the last two left.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boring Company, the infrastructure firm that Musk also leads,\u00a0revealed\u00a0last month that it was also expanding into Texas, posting a number of Austin-based job listings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk in June\u00a0sold his sprawling Los Angeles-area mansion\u00a0for $29 million, and is asking for $9.5 million for a ranch-style home nearby that used to belong to \u201cWilly Wonka\u201d star Gene Wilder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk also has\u00a0five other California properties\u00a0on the market for nearly $100 million.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
