“#NYC\u2019s coronavirus tracing program continues to struggle<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The city\u2019s coronavirus tracing program \u2014 a major component of the Big App<\/a>le\u2019s ability to one day fully beat back the deadly disease \u2014 is struggling three weeks into its inception with tracers securing contacts for just 37 percent of infected New Yorkers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our lifetimes we\u2019ve never seen a disease this widespread and deadly as the coronavirus therefore we\u2019ve never had to set up a contract trace operation of this magnitude before in our history,\u201d Dr. Ted Long, director of the city\u2019s Test and Trace Corps, said during Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s daily briefing Monday.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of June there have been 7,584 new or suspected COVID-19 cases across the five boroughs. Of those novel cases, just 2,808 patients gave information for other people they\u2019d been within six feet of for over 15 minutes. That means tracers reached just 37 percent of contacts for new cases, only 2 percent higher than the previous week.<\/p>\n

Tracers either didn\u2019t have phone numbers for or couldn\u2019t reach over 1,300 of the 7,584 new cases.<\/p>\n

The tracing corps\u2019 goal is to prevent infected people from spreading the disease to others by contacting their associates and asking them to get tested and quarantine.<\/p>\n

Still Long hailed the results as a success.<\/p>\n

He said over 650 contacts reached by tracers were symptomatic and likely contagious.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis group of 650 New Yorkers if we did nothing if the program did not exist, they may go out and infect three more New Yorkers each.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause in that moment when we were speaking to them we were able to intervene to get them to isolate, to quarantine, to keep their families and their neighbors safe and to give them all of the resources to do that. We\u2019ve potentially already prevented in the first three weeks alone of the program up to 2,000 new case of the coronavirus to keep New York City safe,\u201d Long said.<\/p>\n

The corps has monitored 6,395 new COVID-19 cases or their contacts, referred 2,065 to services such as food or medicine delivery, and put 63 people up in isolation hotels, Long said. The city has capacity to house 1,200 coronavirus patients in free hotel rooms.<\/p>\n

De Blasio has faced widespread criticism for putting the city\u2019s Health Hospitals agency in charge of the Test and Trace Corps, instead of the Dept. of Health, which has tracked outbreaks of other disease like the measles. The shift came following reports of tension between the mayor and his Health Commissioner, Dr. Oxiris Barbot.<\/p>\n

Asked about the move on MSNBC Monday Gov. Andrew Cuomo characterized it as a \u201ckerfuffle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s an internal decision by the city, and you have people like Frieden [former NYC Health Commission Thomas Frieden] who have strong opinions that it should have stayed with the Dept. of Health. But look that was a local decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see how it goes and form my point-of-view is the infection rate going up or down? And do we have the tracing in place, which we do and it has been evidenced thus far, so I understand the internal kerfuffle. I stayed out of that. I\u2019m just watching the numbers and if there\u2019s a change in the numbers the state will act. It\u2019s not even up to the cities,\u201d Cuomo said.<\/p>\n

So far the Big Apple\u2019s infection rate has stayed low with just 2 percent of people testing positive for the virus.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
