Matt Reeves\u2019\u00a0The Batman<\/em><\/strong> is now in production with Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, but once upon a time, things were going to be different. At one point, Ben Affleck<\/strong>, who played Batman in Zack Snyder\u2019s\u00a0Batman v Superman<\/em> and\u00a0Justice League<\/em>, was set to direct and star in a new solo\u00a0Batman<\/em> movie. Affleck spent a while developing the project, and came close to making it \u2013 but in the end, it wasn\u2019t to be.<\/p>\n

But what kind of movie might Ben Affleck\u2019s\u00a0The Batman<\/em> have been? According to\u00a0Joe Manga<\/a>niello<\/strong>, who was set to play villain Deathstroke in the film, Affleck\u2019s\u00a0The Batman<\/em> was going to be a lot like David Fincher\u2019s\u00a0The Game<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll get this out of the way up front: I\u2019m no fan of Zack Snyder\u2019s DCEU films. That said, I\u00a0do<\/em> think that Ben Affleck made for a pretty good Batman. I enjoyed Affleck\u2019s take on a crime fighter who has gone off the deep end and then slowly learns to pull himself back to the brink and work with others \u2013 it was something we hadn\u2019t really seen from the character on the big screen before. I\u2019m also a fan of Affleck\u2019s directorial efforts, so with all that in mind, I was interested in his\u00a0Batman<\/em> movie.<\/p>\n

Plans for Affleck\u2019s solo\u00a0Batman<\/em> adventure were announced in 2014, and Affleck worked on the first script<\/a> for the project with\u00a0Geoff Johns. But the movie remained in limbo, and by 2017, Affleck announced that he would no longer be directing the movie, just acting in it. Matt Reeves eventually took the directing job, and for a while there, Affleck remained attached to play the Dark Knight. Eventually, the inevitable happened: Affleck departed the project entirely, making way for a new Batman. And based on the teaser trailer, the movie Reeves has put together looks pretty damn great.<\/p>\n

But a part of me can\u2019t help but wonder how Affleck\u2019s version would\u2019ve turned out. Now, thanks to\u00a0Joe Manganiello, we have some idea. Manganiello was cast to play villain Deathstroke in the film, and he even had a post-credit cameo in\u00a0Justice League<\/em>. Speaking with\u00a0Yahoo Entertainment<\/a>, Manganiello shed some light on what Affleck was cooking up. \u201cThere were similarities to The Game<\/em>,\u201d the actor said. \u201cIt was really cool, really dark and really hard. I was very excited for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Game<\/em> is, of course, David Fincher\u2019s excellent 1997 thriller about a cold, lonely, wealthy man who slowly has his life unravel when he signs up for what he thinks is a harmless game. Much like Michael Douglas\u2019 character in that movie, Affleck\u2019s Bruce Wayne was going to have his world upended. As Manganiello puts it:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a really dark story in which Deathstroke was like a shark or a horror movie villain that was dismantling Bruce\u2019s life from the inside out. It was this systemic thing: He killed everyone close to Bruce and destroyed his life to try and make him suffer because he felt that Bruce was responsible for something that happened to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That sounds interesting, and a part of me wonders if any of these ideas have carried over into Reeves\u2019\u00a0The Batman<\/em>, which looks very Fincher-esque, and appears to have a plot where a supervillain \u2013 in this case The Riddler instead of Deathstroke \u2013 is targeting Batman. We\u2019ll have to wait and see, because\u00a0The Batman<\/em> doesn\u2019t open until\u00a0March 4, 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n
