“#10-year-old chess prodigy can help you beat \u2018Queen\u2019s Gambit\u2019 Beth Harmon<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Ten-year-old brainiac Oliver Boydell recently called \u201ccheckmate\u201d on one of his favorite rivals, chess prodigy Beth Harmon of \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI am technically undefeated against her,\u201d said the Manhattan fifth-grader<\/a>, who narrowly beat the fictional anti-heroine on his iPad. The victory ended a Chess.com challenge <\/a>pitting real players, such as Oliver, against simulated versions of the fictitious Beth at different ages and correlating degrees of difficulties. <\/p>\n

Tapp<\/a>ing into the global obsession sparked by the hit Netflix series<\/a> and the 2020 stay-at-home advisories, the baby-faced national and New York City champion has now published a book: \u201cHe\u2019s Got Moves: 25 Legendary Chess Games as Analyzed by a Smart Kid<\/a>\u201d (Metabook, out now).<\/p>\n

The guide \u2014 whose rights have already been acquired for film and TV \u2014 breaks down more than a dozen of the most riveting clashes in history. They range from \u201cThe Immortal Game<\/a>\u201d of 1851 between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky, to Magnus Carlsen\u2019s online triumph earlier this year against Russian-Dutch star Anish Giri. <\/p>\n

Like \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit,\u201d Oliver manages to make chess play-by-plays exciting. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe knight moves into position,\u201d he writes of a move in \u201cThe Immortal Game.\u201d \u201cAttack, attack, attack! Both White rooks are now threatened.\u201d<\/p>\n

He annotates each with lessons that even fledgling players can apply to their own practice, such as how to dominate by focusing on attacking with minor pieces (such as bishops and knights), like Anderssen did in the aforementioned 1851 match. Another lesson from that infamous game? \u201cYou can move your king early and still be OK,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love seeing these games from legendary players,\u201d Oliver told The Post, after explaining how he took up chess at the age of 5 with encouragement from his parents, Tiffany and Paul. \u201cI had so many notes from [studying] them, I decided to write a book.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was completed in record time thanks to the extended hours he spent at his family\u2019s Tribeca apartment during the spring and summer lockdown.<\/p>\n

The foreword is written by the most celebrated of the boy\u2019s three chess tutors: Bruce Pandolfini, 73, a primary consultant on \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit,\u201d who makes a cameo appearance in the drama. The former coach of late Brooklyn-bred grandmaster, Bobby Fischer, Pandolfini was portrayed by actor Ben Kingsley in the 1993 biopic \u201cSearching for Bobby Fischer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandolfini initially met Oliver in early 2016, a few months after the gifted young mathematician had earned one of his first big trophies at the National Kindergarten Chess Championship. Pandolfini said he was \u201ca very bright kid from the start\u201d who \u201creally loves the beauty and aesthetics of chess.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a perfectionist and has that drive to be the best of the best,\u201d the expert said.<\/p>\n

As the author of around 40 chess best sellers, he joked that he wouldn\u2019t mind if Oliver\u2019s debut publication outsold his collection. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that happens,\u201d Pandolfini said. \u201cWhat better wish [than] to empower students to do better than their teacher?\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver, who plans to follow in Fischer\u2019s footsteps, might well do so. Before COVID-19 took hold, he was a star attraction at the renowned Marshall Chess Club in Greenwich Village where he frequently outmaneuvered the adults.<\/p>\n

He also has taken on grown strangers in chess hot spots like Washington Square Park. Intrigued passers-by tend to crowd around the pint-sized genius who likes to draw up his trademark hoodie to limit peripheral vision and \u201ckeep focused.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I win, I always feel proud and happy,\u201d said Oliver. \u201cEven when I Iose, I\u2019m happy because I know I can learn from my mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mom, Tiffany, a 49-year-old lawyer, who has accompanied her son to chess tournaments throughout America and across the world, is bursting with pride. <\/p>\n

\u201cChess is his passion,\u201d she said, noting that his other interests include skiing, soccer and the video game \u201cFortnite.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wunderkind also has a penchant for TV \u2014 naming his favorite show as, what else? \u201cThe Queen\u2019s Gambit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt proves that anyone can really get engaged with chess and become a phenomenal player,\u201d Oliver said.<\/p>\n

But what about its frequently discussed R-rated scenes involving the main protagonist Beth? \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call them the \u2018adult portion,\u2019 \u201d said Tiffany. \u201cThat\u2019s when I press the fast forward button.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
