A middle-aged Queens woman was hired at a Forest Hills restaurant, then promptly fired before taking her first drink order \u2014 when the owner told her she \u201ccouldn\u2019t handle\u201d the rowdy night crowds because of her age and gender, new court papers allege.<\/p>\n

Out-of-work events planner Mara Risa Newman, 51, was desperate for a job when she app<\/a>lied to work as a server at Dylan\u2019s Forest Hills on July 2, according to her Queens Supreme Court lawsuit from Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The owner, Brian Urbina, hired her on the spot and scheduled her for training five days later, the court papers say.<\/p>\n

When Newman showed up at the scheduled time, \u201cUrbina sat her down and told her she was \u2018too old\u2019 for the position, which he had just days ago hired her for, and that the position was \u2018beneath her,\u2019\u201d the court documents claim.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, \u201cUrbina told her that as a woman she would not be able to handle the rowdy men at Dylan\u2019s in the evening,\u201d the suit alleges.<\/p>\n

Newman \u2014 who says she\u2019s planned events including the Atlantic City Borgata opening and a Maxim Superbowl party \u2014 hasn\u2019t had work since the pandemic hit, she told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI applied to over 1,000 jobs since March,\u201d Newman said in an interview. \u201cI applied for lot of server positions, a lot of manager positions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so shocked that I was speechless, because I\u2019ve never experienced that,\u201d Newman said. \u201cEspecially during COVID when nothing\u2019s beneath anyone. Minimum wage is the same for any age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would have worked 150 times harder than any 20-year-old,\u201d Newman said.<\/p>\n

So Newman was delighted when Urbina offered her the job \u2014 only to be devastated when he so quickly reneged on the offer, according to Newman and the court papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m used to doing whatever it takes to make my clients happy,\u201d she said. \u201cSo to be told that you\u2019re too old, that being a woman you wouldn\u2019t be able to handle being a server, is beyond my comprehension.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

Newman\u2019s lawyer, Matthew Blit of law firm Levine & Blit, slammed the restaurant for having \u201cthe audacity to blatantly deny my client work because of her age and gender.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, instead of serving food for Dylan\u2019s, together we will be serving justice at Dylan\u2019s,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Urbina told The Post that Newman\u2019s allegations are false \u2014 including that he said she couldn\u2019t handle the rowdy patrons.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody gets rowdy. This is Forest Hills, dude. It\u2019s not a rowdy neighborhood,\u201d Urbina said adding that his restaurant doesn\u2019t even have a bar area.<\/p>\n

Knowing that Newman was an event planner he asked her to submit a proposal for starting a catering service at the restaurant. Only Newman never followed through, Urbina claimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that she\u2019s gone through a hard time,\u201d Urbina said. \u201cShe showed up here crying a few times and I felt bad. <\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018We\u2019re looking to go into catering and you do this thing, maybe you can do this for us.\u2019 It was the biggest mistake I could have done,\u201d Urbina said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have older people working for me. It\u2019s just not an issue,\u201d he said. \u201cMy reputation\u2019s impeccable.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
