“#Dionne Warwick on becoming a Twitter<\/a> diva and turning 80<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

When Dionne Warwick came for Chance the Rapp<\/a>er in a Twitter exchange that went viral last week<\/a>, people were saying a little prayer for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are very obviously a rapper why did you put it in your stage name?\u201d Warwick asked Chance in a tweet<\/a>. \u201cI cannot stop thinking about this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legendary diva quipped, \u201cI am now Dionne the Singer,\u201d while Chance responded that \u201cI will be whatever you wanna call me Ms Warwick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warwick, too, was awestruck. <\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think he would know who Dionne Warwick actually is,\u201d the five-time Grammy winner \u2014 who will turn 80 on Saturday \u2014 told The Post. \u201cAnd to my surprise, he felt the same way: He was surprised that I knew who he was. And, of course, I knew who he was!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since her viral moment<\/a>, the songbird has gotten love from other stars, such as Taylor Swift and The Weeknd, who, like Chance, had been singled out by Warwick about the \u201cthe\u201d in his stage name \u2014 and questioned about why he misspelled \u201cweekend.\u201d After The Weeknd slid into her DMs, he gave Warwick an explanation. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018Well, that\u2019s just the way I felt I wanted to do it,\u2019 \u201d Warwick said. \u201cI said, \u2018Well, you\u2019re entitled.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Warwick demurs when asked about other young artists in the biz. <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any favorites,\u201d she said. \u201cMost of the youngsters, their music is basically for their ears \u2014 and much younger ears than mine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are a few exceptions.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery now and then something will come across that kinda catches\u00a0me, like \u2018Holy\u2019 with Chance and Justin Bieber,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re not people I would normally be listening to. It\u2019s really a lovely, lovely song and very meaningful.\u201d <\/p>\n

Since her feisty fun with Chance in the Twitterverse, the \u201cThat\u2019s What Friends Are For\u201d chanteuse has become real-life pals with the rapper, even chatting on the phone with him. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a wonderful conversation,\u201d said Warwick, who will now be collaborating with Chance on an upcoming charity single to benefit her Hunger: Not Impossible initiative. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be able to say [that]. He\u2019s a wonderful young man.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was her niece, Brittani Warwick, who schooled her Aunt Dionne all about Twitter. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was watching my nieces and nephews, and all this fun they were having on Twitter,\u201d said Warwick. \u201cI said, \u2018I wanna do that! Can you show me how to do it?\u2019 And she taught me what to do, and all of a sudden I was having me some fun, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a couple of months on Twitter, Warwick is clearly getting the hang of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s becoming a little easier for me,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s really just been a bunch of fun for me \u2014 the freedom and the giggles that you can have by asking questions and getting to know people, finding that they seem to know me, which is a good thing. It was a lovely surprise to know that so many [from the younger generation] did know me.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for younger artists using social media to connect with their fans today, Warwick said, \u201cI do believe that it can be very, very instrumental and very good if used properly \u2026 keeping it light and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warwick advises young artists to still keep some mystery on social media, noting that fans didn\u2019t need to know all of her business early in her six-decade career. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they still don\u2019t,\u201d said the star, who is currently unattached.<\/p>\n

It will \u201cdefinitely\u201d be tough for Warwick to settle for a virtual 80th birthday celebration on Saturday because of the pandemic. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s completely alien,\u201d she said, adding that she plans to have a proper party when it\u2019s safe in 2021. \u201cAbsolutely. I intend to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

But being stuck in her South Orange, NJ, home \u201chasn\u2019t been too bad\u201d for her. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve kinda used it as a vacation I\u2019ve never had,\u201d said Warwick. \u201cI finally got to get to know my home and sleep in my own bed and not worry about room service. I eat when I wanna eat and what I wanna eat and how I want it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added with a laugh, \u201cI\u2019ve discovered rooms I didn\u2019t even remember in my home.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
