\n A noose was found hanging from a telephone line in a Maine town \u2014 where Black Lives Matter signs were also vandalized, according to reports.<\/p>\n

The noose along Route 15 in Deer Isle was removed by an arborist on Saturday after he saw a \u201cdisturbing\u201d photo of it on social media<\/a>, the Bangor Daily News<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I couldn\u2019t leave it be if it was still there,\u201d Jason Lepper, of Blue Hill, told the newspaper while questioning while it wasn\u2019t plucked off sooner.<\/p>\n

Mina Mattes, of Deer Isle, shared an image of the rope late Friday on Facebook, saying the noose was easily distinguishable in the backdrop of a summer sunset.<\/p>\n

\u201cA noose, hanging from the power lines, next to a huge WHITE LIVES MATTER sign,\u201d Mattes wrote. \u201cJust this morning, less than a mile away, black lives matter signs that had only been up for a few hours were vandalized and torn down \u2026 Tell me again this isn\u2019t \u2018our problem,\u2019 that it \u2018doesn\u2019t happ<\/a>en here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Mattes, who has organized protests against police brutality and racial injustice at Blue Hill\u2019s town hall, said the demonstrators had been previously confronted by critics with the \u201cmost vile, racist stuff\u201d imaginable.<\/p>\n

The discovery was made on Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the United States some 155 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t some symbol from the past, this is a very active symbol of hate and violence, and to have that threat literally hanging over people\u2019s heads at a time like this when so many people are already so scared and so threatened \u2014 you know, it\u2019s just completely not okay,\u201d Mattes told WCSH. \u201cIt\u2019s really despicable.\u201d<\/p>\n

An investigation was underway by the Hancock County Sheriff\u2019s Office, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

Calls seeking additional comment by The Post were referred to Maine State Police. Investigators there did not immediately return a message seeking comment.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
