Johns Hopkins University heralded its founder\u2019s abolitionism for nearly a century, but a reexamination of the school\u2019s\u00a0history\u00a0recently revealed that Johns Hopkins actually owned several slaves.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that Mr. Hopkins had, at any time in his life, a direct connection to slavery \u2014 a crime against humanity that tragically persisted in the state of Maryland until 1864 \u2014 is a difficult revelation for us, as we know it will be for our community, at home and abroad and most especially our Black faculty, students, staff and alumni,\u201d Johns Hopkins University leaders wrote in\u00a0a letter<\/a>\u00a0to the school community Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The revelations came to light as part of the\u00a0Hopkins Retrospective, a project that began seven years ago to explore the\u00a0school\u2019s\u00a0origins and history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The findings contradict\u00a0a narrative that was a large part of the school\u2019s history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor most of the last century, our institutions believed Johns Hopkins to be an early and staunch abolitionist whose father, a committed\u00a0Quaker, had freed the family\u2019s enslaved people in 1807,\u201d schools leaders wrote in Wednesday\u2019s letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut over the past several months, research being done as a part of the Hopkins Retrospective has caused us to question this narrative. We now have government census records that state Mr. Hopkins was the owner of one enslaved person listed in his household in 1840 and four enslaved people listed in 1850.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johns Hopkins launched the school,\u00a0America\u2019s first research university, in 1876. It created the hospital in 1889. School leaders noted that Hopkins\u00a0\u201cspecifically directed that the hospital extend its care to include the indigent of Baltimore regardless of sex, age, or race.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe revelations change our understanding of our founder\u2019s\u00a0life.\u00a0They do not\u00a0change the\u00a0nature of what these institutions represent,\u201d JHU President Ronald J. Daniels said in\u00a0a video<\/a>\u00a0released Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAt their best, the University and hospital are enriched by the\u00a0values and aspirations laid out in our founder\u2019s will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johns Hopkins University\u2019s reckoning comes as other schools also come to terms with disreputable parts of their history.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this week,\u00a0the\u00a0Virginia Military Institute began to move<\/a>\u00a0a statue of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson from its campus to a museum.<\/p>\n

Last month,\u00a0St. Mary\u2019s College of Maryland unveiled\u00a0the\u00a0Commemorative to Enslaved Peoples of Southern Maryland<\/a>, a project that remembers the slaves who once lived on the campus.\u00a0\n <\/div>\n
