The feds are expected to scrutinize recent allergic reactions to Pfizer\u2019s coronavirus vaccine before clearing it for emergency use, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Two people who received the groundbreaking COVID-19 shot in the UK suffered severe allergic reactions to it, leading British health officials to warn that individuals with \u201csignificant\u201d allergic reactions may not be able to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n

Those reactions will likely be discussed during a Thursday meeting of the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s vaccine advisory committee, which will decide whether to recommend the shot for an emergency use authorization, according to Moncef Slaoui, chief adviser to the Trump administration\u2019s Operation Warp Speed initiative. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy expectation is that this is new news<\/a>, and I would assume \u2014 but of course the FDA will make those decisions \u2014 that tomorrow this will be part of the consideration,\u201d Slaoui said at a Wednesday press briefing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs in the UK, the expectation would be that subjects with known severe reaction, allergic reactions, should not take the vaccine until we understand exactly what happ<\/a>ened here,\u201d Slaoui added.<\/p>\n

People with histories of severe allergic reactions were excluded from Pfizer\u2019s large-scale clinical trial of the vaccine, which is typical for such studies, Slaoui said.<\/p>\n

Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech, have said the shot posed no major safety concerns in the trial involving about 44,000 people. FDA staff affirmed those findings this week, noting that recipients did report side effects such as headaches, fatigue and pain at the injection site.<\/p>\n

The vaccine committee will discuss any allergic reactions that showed up in the trial at Thursday\u2019s meeting, FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take this seriously,\u201d Hahn said in an interview with\u00a0NBC\u2019s \u201cTODAY\u201d show<\/a><\/u>. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the reasons that we at FDA do such a careful review, line by line, of the patient data, is because our label around a vaccine will not just say who should get it, but who should not receive the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The concerns about allergies shouldn\u2019t prevent Pfizer\u2019s vaccine from being approved and administered by the end of the year,\u00a0according to CNBC<\/a>.\u00a0The FDA\u00a0could formally clear the shot for emergency use within days of the vaccine panel meeting, which is slated to run until 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

June Raine, the head of the UK\u2019s drug regulatory agency, said \u201cthe benefits in protecting people against COVID-19 outweigh the risks\u201d posed by the rare allergic reactions.<\/p>\n

The FDA \u201cmay indeed try to exclude certain people for a period of time, or make the recommendation that every vaccination site have equipment in place so that they can deal efficiently with allergic reactions,\u201d Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNBC. <\/p>\n

Pfizer shares were up about 0.2 percent at $41.93\u00a0as of 10:23 a.m. Thursday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
