Separate probes by the DOJ and states into Google\u2019s power in digital advertising markets continue, as does the Justice Department\u2019s review of Google\u2019s proposed acquisition of Fitbit Inc.<br \/>\n        FIT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202323205\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.35%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Their focus is the fact that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/216573\/worldwide-market-share-of-search-engines\/#:~:text=Global%20market%20share%20of%20search%20engines%202010%2D2020&amp;text=Ever%20since%20the%20introduction%20of,share%20as%20of%20July%202020.\" class=\"icon none\">86% of internet searches are done through Google<\/a>, a staggering number that gives the unit of Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.06%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       nearly unilateral control over the distribution of information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more:\u00a0Big Tech\u2019s antitrust woes grow, but will it actually matter?<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta of the District of Columbia, the judge in the Justice Department\u2019s case, should also oversee class actions and other cases alleging antitrust violations against Google, according to a Nov. 5 court filing. Attorneys general in 11 states \u2014 including Florida, Georgia and Texas \u2014 have joined the DoJ\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<p>Google continues to stiff-arm the charges, offering its product\u2019s superiority as a defense. \u201cWe repeatedly have underscored that people go to Google search because they want to, not because they have to,\u201d Google Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said in a DealBook interview on Nov. 18. \u201cGoogle rose to the position that it has because it is a better product. We keep innovating and investing\u201d in such <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> as machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>Google Chief Legal Officer Kent Walker called the DOJ\u2019s case \u201cdeeply flawed\u201d in an Oct. 20 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/outreach-initiatives\/public-policy\/response-doj\" class=\"icon none\">blog post<\/a>, though the Silicon Valley powerhouse is employing a battalion of attorneys from prestigious law firms such as Wilson Sonsini Goodrich &amp; Rosati and Morgan, Lewis &amp; Bockius to represent it.<\/p>\n<p>This indicates to Bhaskar Chakravorti, dean of global business at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, that the antitrust lawsuit will proceed slowly, and could erode. \u201cNot enough Democratic state AGs got behind the DOJ\u2019s actions in the first place \u2014 as in none,\u201d Chakravorti told MarketWatch. \u201cIt was rushed through by [Attorney General William] Barr and an all-Republican cast of state AGs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A majority of states investigating Google did not sign on to the Justice Department\u2019s suit, and could still bring charges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also:  After charges against Google, road map to antitrust changes contains many potential routes <\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>With House Democrats seeking a more comprehensive review of Big Tech\u2019s powers, the antitrust lawsuit \u201ccontains a risk that it would detract from that much more holistic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to tackling the power of Big Tech beyond Google alone,\u201d Chakravorti said. \u201cThey may want to push the Google lawsuit back into the annex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the evidence remains compelling. Yelp Inc.<br \/>\n        YELP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201334325\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.29%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       has long held that Google favored its own products and services in search, often to the exclusion of Yelp and at the expense to consumers. Google also allegedly stole content from developers, such as restaurant reviews from Yelp.<\/p>\n<p>In the risk factors section of its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/s24.q4cdn.com\/521204325\/files\/doc_financials\/2020\/q2\/Q2-Yelp-10-Q.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">10-Q filing on July 31<\/a>, Yelp warned that search engines have \u201cmade changes in the past to their ranking algorithms, methodologies and design layouts that have reduced the prominence of links to our platform and negatively impacted our traffic, and we expect they will continue to make such changes from time to time in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yelp claims Google\u2019s update to its search algorithm in the fourth quarter of 2019 may have harmed, and may be continuing to harm, its traffic. Similarly, Apple, Google or other marketplace operators \u201cmay make changes to their marketplaces that make access to our products more difficult,\u201d according to the filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a broad business perspective, this is going to take a long time, years to play out, just like Microsoft,\u201d Yelp Chief Financial Officer David Schwarzbach told MarketWatch. \u201cWe welcome the scrutiny, but remain focused on our own business. They [Google] are part of the competitive landscape we face. It is an element of the competition we face.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>U.S. regulators might also consider their legal path forward, following a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of antitrust charges by the European Union that resulted in nearly $10 billion in fines but little change in the competitive landscape. (In 2017, the EU fined Google $2.8 billion for abusing its market dominance by giving an \u201cillegal advantage\u201d in search results to Google Shopping.) The reason?
