Disney dropped a new\u00a0What If\u2026<\/strong>?<\/em> trailer during their huge Investor Day event, bringing us more footage of the animated series<\/a>. Like the comics that inspired it,\u00a0What If\u2026?<\/em> presents us with alternate realities; versions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that are either slightly, or vastly different from what we\u2019ve experienced in the films. It\u2019s a great idea, and bringing in the MCU actors to voice their animated counterparts makes the whole endeavor even more enjoyable.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s dive into the trailer and see what we can decipher.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>
\nPart of the fun of this trailer is that it starts off with shots designed to trick you. Sure, it\u2019s all animated, but the imagery we\u2019re seeing is\u00a0familiar<\/em>. There\u2019s Nick Fury (designed to resemble Samuel L. Jackson<\/strong>) uncovering Captain America\u2019s frozen shield, presumably after Cap ended up frozen at the end of\u00a0The First Avenger<\/em>. There\u2019s Doctor Strange\u2019s\u00a0Eye of Agamotto. There\u2019s Star-Lord from\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>. There\u2019s the shot of Tony Stark chowing down on a donut from\u00a0Iron Man 2<\/em>. And then\u2026things change. \u201cSpace. Time. Reality,\u201d a whispery voice tells us. \u201cIt\u2019s more than a linear path. \u201cIt\u2019s a prism of endless possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The first indication that things are not what they seem comes here \u2013 Star-Lord removes his mask, and \u2013 shocker! \u2013 it\u2019s not Chris Pratt\u2019s Peter Quill. Instead, Star-Lord is now\u00a0T\u2019Challa, AKA Black Panther! (The late Chadwick Boseman<\/strong> reportedly recorded the voice for the character here, although oddly enough, we don\u2019t hear his voice in this trailer).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The changes keep on coming. The familiar pod that pipsqueak Steve Rogers entered only to emerge as the buff Captain America opens up to reveal Peggy Carter.
\n\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And sure enough, instead of Captain America, we now have Peggy as\u00a0Captain Britain. But Steve Rogers isn\u2019t entirely out of the equation just yet\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Wakanda, a young\u00a0T\u2019Challa ends up abducted by\u2026Yondu, voiced by Michael Rooker<\/strong>. The implication is clear: instead of abducting the young Peter Quill, Yondu took T\u2019Challa, and that\u2019s how T\u2019Challa went down the road to being this alternate-dimension Star-Lord.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>
\nRemember when I said Steve Rogers wasn\u2019t out of the equation? Here he is, still in his scrawny form.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And here\u2019s Peggy riding on the back of someone in early Iron Man-type armor. Who is that someone? By all accounts, it\u2019s Steve. Instead of becoming Captain America in this timeline, he becomes a version of Iron Man\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026and don\u2019t worry. These two crazy kids still have the hots for each other.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, we meet our narrator. \u201cI am the Watcher,\u201d he tells us. \u201cI am your guide through these vast new realities.\u201d This character has a name \u2013\u00a0Uatu, and he\u2019s voiced by Jeffrey Wright<\/strong>. In the original\u00a0What If\u2026?<\/em> comics, the Watcher was kind of like the Crypt Keeper without the puns \u2013 he\u2019d set the story up, and then it would go from there. More Watchers were glimpsed \u2013 in live-action form \u2013 in\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2<\/em>. In an interview<\/a>,\u00a0What If\u2026?<\/em> series writer\u00a0A.C. Bradley<\/strong> said of the character:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s above everything else. He\u2019s above everyone, but there should almost be a gleefulness watching these stories. I keep using this metaphor, which I\u2019m not too sure if anyone likes, but I always compare it to the pizza rat meme that went around a few years ago. Someone next to the subway recorded this video of a rat dragging a slice of pizza across the platform. I think that\u2019s what The Watcher is \u2013 he\u2019s a guy watching a rat drag a slice of pizza across the platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So there you have it: the Watcher is Pizza Rat.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

From here, the trailer goes into the standard \u201clet\u2019s throw a bunch of quick shots in your face!\u201d route that all trailers do these days. The shots themselves are mostly unremarkable \u2013 Hawkeye drawing back his bow; Captain Marvel striking a pose; Bucky running around. But I did want to single out this one, which app<\/a>ears to be a\u00a0very<\/em> buff version of\u00a0Benicio del Toro<\/strong>\u2018s Collector character from the\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy\u00a0<\/em>films. Seriously, look at that chiseled jawline. Dude\u2019s been working out.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The big \u201cmoney shot\u201d comes near the end \u2013 although is it really a money shot if it was featured in a previous trailer? Probably not. But here it is anyway \u2013 zombie Captain America! This is obviously a storyline that\u2019s separate from the Peggy Carter storyline, so you\u2019ll have multiple \u201calternative Cap\u201d tales to look forward to.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After the title card, we get a little stinger. All through the trailer, there are various shots of Doctor Strange doing\u2026stuff. I honestly have no damn idea what he\u2019s doing, other than waving his hands around and being mystical. But none of it seemed particularly\u00a0different<\/em> from what we expect from the character. This final beat finally clues us into what\u2019s going on here: Doctor Strange ends up fighting\u2026Doctor Strange. Only this other Doctor Strange has a bunch of red-glowing magic at his disposal, which suggests he\u2019s evil<\/em>.\u00a0How does all of this work? We\u2019ll have to wait and see.<\/p>\n
