McCarthy at National Review<\/a>. He cites \u201cunique challenges\u201d in conducting such a probe, which involves \u201csuspicious\u201d activities linked to Joe Biden himself. \u201cA Biden Justice Department could bury the probe.\u201d Yet if charges aren\u2019t imminent, the investigation will continue, so it\u2019s \u201clikely\u201d the department will tap a special counsel. \u201cOne need not be a fan of that institution\u201d \u2014 McCarthy\u2019s not \u2014 \u201cto grasp that the classic situation for a special counsel is when the Justice Department has a profound conflict of interest.\u201d Some \u201ccritical decisions\u201d now have to be made.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urban beat: NYC\u2019s War on Small Biz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/nyc-consumer-protection-regulations-harming-small-businesses\">At City Journal, Michael Hendrix recounts<\/a> the harrowing tale of Gary and Jolie Alony, owners of Thompson Chemists in SoHo, who were slapped by a city inspector with a $28,500 fine for \u201cprice-gouging\u201d in July: They\u2019d charged $20 for Clorox wipes and $15 for thermometers, using a \u201csimilar markup as before the pandemic\u201d and in line with prices elsewhere. \u201cOne person\u2019s unscrupulous profiteering may be another\u2019s merely high price.\u201d Economists, after all, might see high prices as \u201ca sign of a market demanding greater supply.\u201d \u201cWe can\u2019t afford to pay,\u201d sighs Jolie. Their business is down 90 percent; they can\u2019t even pay rent. \u201cIt makes you want to shut your door,\u201d she says, though they hope to stick around if they win their appeal of the fine. Steve Israel at The Hill<\/a>. Democrats, after all, \u201cwon\u2019t have Donald Trump to kick around anymore.\u201d One idea: \u201cListen more\u201d to average members. A recent report by the Future Majority group and Change Research data firm shows that \u201ceconomic concerns predominate.\u201d \u201cMaking the American worker the hero of the story is unifying\u201d and \u201cmore constructive than pitting people against each other,\u201d Future Majority advised. The key to delivering that message: \u201cAvoid self-defeatist language\u201d and \u201cact like we actually won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the right: Expect a Third Obama Term<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden denies he\u2019ll preside over a third Obama term, but his Cabinet picks are \u201cthe same people who made such a hash of things from 2009 to 2017,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/columns\/obama-iii\/\">The Washington Free Beacon\u2019s Matthew Continetti points out<\/a>. Biden is bringing back Obama appointees like John Kerry and Alejandro Mayorkas, who were \u201cknown for their elitism, imperiousness, and cocksure expertise.\u201d The incoming president insists his tenure will be \u201cnovel\u201d \u2014 because the world is \u201ctotally different.\u201d But \u201cwhat matters is whether Biden will diverge\u201d from President Barack Obama\u2019s team \u201cin people, policy and style.\u201d So far, Biden has been copying his former boss, though with \u201cmore awkward presentation and additional scandal\u201d \u2014 assuring that \u201cthe third Obama term\u201d will be \u201cas disappointing as the first two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Libertarian: Second Thoughts on Lockdowns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2020\/12\/09\/im-not-sure-we-know-what-were-doing-says-a-newly-skeptical-california-lockdown-advocate\/\">At Reason, Jacob Sullum finds<\/a> \u201cSan Mateo County Health Officer Scott Morrow\u2019s misgivings about\u201d fighting COVID with more \u201csweeping\u201d restrictions \u201cstriking,\u201d because the California county was among the first to introduce them in March. \u201cI\u2019m not sure we know what we\u2019re doing,\u201d Morrow declared.
