\n Culture watch: Toppling History \u2014 and Nuance<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many liberals \u201creally do think that America is fascist,\u201d laments Daniel McCarthy in Spectator USA, so they genuinely see \u201cpetty vandalism\u201d as a \u201cheroic act of resistance. Knock the head off a statue of Columbus, smash the glass of every storefront on the street, and you\u2019re defeating Adolf Hitler all over again.\u201d The sheer ignorant zealotry means all nuance is lost to the iconoclasts. Thus, they attacked an App<\/a>omattox statue in a DC suburb, named for the courthouse at which the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered. \u201cFar from a gesture of defiance toward the victorious North,\u201d it \u201cshowed an unarmed soldier, eyes downcast and arms crossed, his face somber \u2014 an image of manly defeat\u201d intended \u201cto trouble a civilization given to self-congratulation\u201d and as \u201ca reminder that even Americans know what it is like to lose a war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liberal: Experts\u2019 Catastrophic COVID Messaging<\/strong><\/p>\n

For months, scientists and other experts have known that \u201cwarm weather, mask-wearing and better hygienic practices\u201d could mitigate the spread of COVID-19 \u2014 yet, New York\u2019s David Wallace-Wells sighs, they \u201cfailed to communicate most of these nuances\u201d to the American public, insisting that \u201clockdowns were absolutely necessary.\u201d Adding to the confusion, many of the experts alternately played down the threat before they \u201cvociferously attacked Wisconsin\u2019s in-person election\u201d then 180\u2019d to defend left-wing protests. The United States is now \u201cthe single most significant global incubator of the pandemic\u201d \u2014 thanks to these messaging failures.<\/p>\n

Science<\/a> desk: To the Moon, SpaceX!<\/strong><\/p>\n

SpaceX\u2019s successful rocket launch last month proves that \u201ccommercially developed spacecraft\u201d can \u201ccarry crews to the moon \u2014 and perhaps beyond \u2014 much faster and cheaper than\u201d we\u2019d ever envisioned, Robert Zubrin and Homer Hickam cheer at The Washington Post. \u201cShouldn\u2019t we take advantage of it?\u201d When Vice President Mike Pence challenged NASA to \u201cland astronauts on the moon by 2024,\u201d it just kept working on its Orion spacecraft \u201cstill years away from launch.\u201d Yet SpaceX\u2019s Dragon craft, used in last month\u2019s launch, is cheaper and \u201cmuch better\u201d than Orion and doesn\u2019t require building a \u201cnew space station,\u201d as NASA proposes. If Team Trump and Congress \u201creally want to reach the moon by 2024,\u201d they should embrace private firms\u2019 efforts.<\/p>\n

Conservative: Our Broken Republic<\/strong><\/p>\n

Historically, The New York Times\u2019 Ross Douthat points out, America\u2019s culture wars \u201cwere often settled through democratic deliberation, rather than the kind of ruling the Supreme Court just delivered on gay and transgender civil rights.\u201d In an earlier age, \u201cCongress debated and passed laws. State legislatures did the same. Constitutional amendments were proposed, passed, ratified \u2014 and when necessary, repealed.\u201d But now, Congress hardly legislates, and the Supreme Court does the heavy lifting on social<\/a> and cultural issues. That leaves major decisions to a select few robed and highly educated lawyers \u2014 and their preferences. \u201cThe boundaries of voting rights and free expression are policed by John Roberts. Our abortion laws reflect the preferences of Anthony Kennedy. And now anti-discrimination law and religious liberty protections will reflect what Neil Gorsuch, author of the new decision, thinks is right and good.\u201d Whether such a republic can last, Douthat archly concludes, rests with a \u201chigher court.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education beat: A Vet for (College) President<\/strong><\/p>\n

University of South Carolina President (and US Army vet) Robert L. Caslen \u201cfaced dissention\u201d from board members, student organizations and faculty members early on \u2014 but, Barrett Y. Bogue and Emma Moore note at The Hill, he now \u201cenjoys high praises on how he approached his first few months on the job.\u201d Indeed, research shows that veterans bring \u201cunique and beneficial skills\u201d to \u201chigher-education leadership roles.\u201d The military and academia, after all, share \u201coverlapping values, traditions and leadership opportunities,\u201d including \u201cmission focus,\u201d resiliency and \u201ccomfort with ambiguity.\u201d These skills will be invaluable to university systems now \u201cfacing a number of challenges,\u201d including \u201cdecreasing enrollment,\u201d that \u201crequire flexible leaders prepared to navigate the unknown.\u201d Bottom line: More schools should \u201clook beyond academia\u201d \u2014 and hire veterans.<\/p>\n
