Turn your Xbox Series X or S into a retro gaming powerhouse and emulate the PS2, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>Cube, Dreamcast, and more, all without impacting your ability to play retail games.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Activate_Developer_Mode\"><\/span>First, Activate Developer Mode<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The first thing you have to do is activate Developer Mode on your Xbox. To do so, you\u2019ll need a paid Microsoft Partner developer account. This requires a one-time fee of $19 (pricing is different in other regions). From there, it\u2019s just a matter of configuring your network connection, and then accessing the Xbox Developer Mode web interface via a browser.<\/p>\n<p>For this guide, we\u2019ll assume you\u2019ve followed the full setup procedure and your console is already booted in Developer Mode.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing_the_RetroArch_Emulator\"><\/span>Installing the RetroArch Emulator<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.retroarch.com\/\">RetroArch<\/a> is an emulator that works on virtually every platform and has a UWP package made just for Xbox One (and the Series X and S, by extension). This multisystem emulator uses plugins or \u201ccores\u201d to expand support for lots of different systems. You can choose which cores you want to use and switch between them for the best performance.<\/p>\n<p>RetroArch makes it possible to play games from a huge variety of platforms right on your Xbox. This includes arcade machines, retro consoles (like SNES and Genesis), modern handhelds (like PSP), and early 3D home consoles (like Sony PlayStation, Nintendo N64, and Sega Dreamcast).<\/p>\n<p>To get going, you first have to download and install RetroArch. On a computer, just head to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.retroarch.com\/?page=platforms\">RetroArch Downloads<\/a> page and grab the Xbox One version and the \u201cMicrosoft Visual C++ 2015 UWP Runtime Package\u201d dependency file.<\/p>\n<p>Then, access the Xbox Developer Mode web interface by visiting the web address in the \u201cRemote Access\u201d section in Dev Home on your console.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xdeploy_retroarch_edited.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.uhg_CquIxd.png\" alt=\"Deploy UWP App\" width=\"650\" height=\"359\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Select \u201cAdd\u201d on the Home page to access the file upload interface, and then drag and drop the APPXBUNDLE file you downloaded into the box (or click \u201cChoose File\u201d and locate it). Highlight it, press the Views button on your controller (the two squares), and then select \u201cView Details.\u201d On this menu, change the \u201cApp type\u201d drop-down to \u201cGame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xmenu_noicons.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.5c50UTdfXX.png\" alt=\"RetroArch first boot\" width=\"650\" height=\"367\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Back out of that menu, and then press A to launch RetroArch. When you\u2019re asked to sign in, type your Xbox Live account details if you haven\u2019t yet done so.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting_Up_RetroArch\"><\/span>Setting Up RetroArch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After RetroArch is installed and running on your console, you can finish setting up the emulator, add some ROMs, and get to playing some games. Before you jump in, though, there are a few things you\u2019ll probably want to do.<\/p>\n<p>RetroArch\u2019s interface is modeled on Sony\u2019s X-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> bar. This first appeared on the PS3 and, later, the PS4. There\u2019s a horizontal and vertical menu, but you won\u2019t see the icons representing the horizontal menu when you first launch the UWP version of RetroArch.<\/p>\n<p>After the interface loads, press left and right on the d-pad to see the other options.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xupdate_assets.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.Won8Gw4t4D.png\" alt=\"Updating RetroArch assets\" width=\"650\" height=\"367\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can fix this by installing missing assets and switching the video driver. To do so, select \u201cMain Menu\u201d at the top left, scroll down to \u201cOnline Updater,\u201d and then select \u201cUpdate Assets.\u201d While there, you can also update core info files, controller profiles, databases, overlays, and anything else you need to.<\/p>\n<p>After this process is complete, a black screen will appear and the menu will reload.<\/p>\n<p>Now, you\u2019ll have to define a button combination that will allow you to access the in-game Pause menu. To do that, just return to the \u201cMain Menu\u201d and move horizontally to select \u201cSettings\u201d at the top left.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xgamepad_menu_combo.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.9574O4rz03.png\" alt=\"Define Quick Menu hotkey\" width=\"650\" height=\"367\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scroll down to \u201cInput\u201d and select \u201cHotkeys.\u201d Define the \u201cMenu Toggle Gamepad Combo\u201d shortcut by pressing left and right on the d-pad until you find a shortcut that works for you (\u201cStart + Select\u201d or \u201cR3 + L3\u201d are both good options).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704659\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xmenu_proper.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.qQIJI1LcB1.png\" alt=\"RetroArch menu icons\" width=\"650\" height=\"367\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, save your settings by returning to the \u201cMain Menu\u201d and selecting \u201cConfiguration File.\u201d Click \u201cSave Current Configuration,\u201d and then quit and reload RetroArch. You should then see a much cleaner interface with all the icons visible.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adding_ROMs_and_BIOS_Files\"><\/span>Adding ROMs and BIOS Files<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>ROMs should go in the \u201cDownloads\u201d folder on the local disk space accessible by RetroArch. To do this, open the Xbox Device Portal in a browser on your computer, and click \u201cFile Explorer.\u201d Navigate to LocalAppData &gt; RetroArch &gt; LocalState &gt; Downloads, and then use the file picker at the bottom to add any ROMs you\u2019ve legally acquired.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> Be sure to follow all relevant laws when acquiring ROMs and BIOS files. A law professor\u00a0provided us with a detailed analysis of the legalities surrounding emulating retro video games.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It should be possible to add ROMs to an external drive, but unfortunately, due to the temperamental nature of RetroArch in its UWP app form, we couldn\u2019t get this to work during testing.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have to put any BIOS files you want to use in the LocalAppData &gt; RetroArch &gt; LocalState &gt; System\u00a0folder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xupload_rom_edited.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.vjfCrEF5UP.png\" alt=\"Uploading ROMs to RetroArch\" width=\"650\" height=\"227\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Is Downloading Retro Video Game ROMs Ever Legal?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Playing_Games\"><\/span>Playing Games<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To play a game, select \u201cLoad Core\u201d in the \u201cMain Menu.\u201d Be sure to choose\u00a0a core that matches the system type you\u2019re playing. You might have to do some research to find out which are best for the job.<\/p>\n<p>With a core selected, choose \u201cLoad Content\u201d in \u201cMain Menu\u201d to locate your ROM file. Keep pressing A until your ROM file loads. In the future, you\u2019ll be able to find your core and ROM file in the \u201cHistory\u201d menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-704661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/xhistory.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.8y666j5FYR.png\" alt=\"RetroArch history\" width=\"650\" height=\"367\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To pause a game, save a gameplay state, or return to the main RetroArch menu, use the hotkey shortcut you defined earlier. From there, you can also quit RetroArch. To return to Retail mode, just select \u201cLeave Dev Mode\u201d from the \u201cQuick Actions\u201d menu in Dev Home.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Best_Backward_Compatibility_Yet\"><\/span>The Best Backward Compatibility Yet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Xbox Series X and S not only have the best backward compatibility of this generation, but they\u2019re also incredibly powerful emulation machines. Since this version of RetroArch has been thrust into the spotlight, developers will hopefully pay a bit more attention to the UWP build in the future.<\/p>\n<p>RetroArch is a fantastic multisystem emulator, regardless of which system you run it on.
