He was 86.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pride gave his final performance\u2014a duet of his song \u201cKiss an Angel Good Mornin\u2019\u201d with nascent Black country singer Jimmie Allen\u2014at the Country Music Association Awards in November, where he received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. The show had been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/no-masks-distancing-sight-cmas-064027358.html\"}' href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/no-masks-distancing-sight-cmas-064027358.html\">criticized<\/a> for being held indoors\u2014without masks\u2014amid the raging coronavirus pandemic. Pride had previously won the Entertainer of the Year award at the CMAs in 1971, and was named the top male vocalist in both 1971 and 1972.<\/p>\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit consumer-marketing-unit--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit--no-failsafe\" role=\"presentation\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"consumer-marketing-unit__slot consumer-marketing-unit__slot--article-mid-content consumer-marketing-unit__slot--in-content\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"journey-unit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pride was born to a sharecropper in Sledge, Mississippi, on March 18, 1934. He served in the Army and worked at a smelting plant in Missouri, later <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/nlbemuseum.com\/history\/players\/pridec.html\"}' href=\"https:\/\/nlbemuseum.com\/history\/players\/pridec.html\">pursuing a baseball career<\/a> in the Memphis Red Sox and the Birmingham Black Barons in a bid for the major leagues. In 1963 he moved to Nashville to cut his first demos. He would sign with RCA in 1965, and release his first album <em>Country<\/em> in 1966. It would be the first of eight albums to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Pride would go on to release 41 studio country albums, two gospel albums and a Christmas album. He scored 29 No. 1 singles on the Country charts, including \u201cKiss An Angel Good Mornin\u2019,\u201d \u201cIs Anybody Goin\u2019 to San Antone,\u201d and \u201cMountain of Love.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"cne-interlude-embed\"><\/div>\n<p>Between 1967 and 1987 Pride was RCA Records\u2019 top-selling country artist. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 1967, eventually joining as a member in 1993.
