Teen drama \u201cThe Wilds\u201d takes an all-girls \u201cLord of the Flies\u201d premise and mixes it with \u201cLost.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Premiering Friday on Amazon, the 10-episode series<\/a> follows a group of high school-aged girls who are stranded on an island after a plane crash. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going through all these intense experiences to keep themselves alive,\u201d says showrunner Amy Harris, best known for \u201cSex and the City\u201d and \u201cGossip Girl.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of laughs and relatable small moments that people can hopefully see themselves in \u2014 even on that island.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plot jumps between centering on the girls as they navigate their castaway circumstances to flashbacks of each girl\u2019s life before the island. <\/p>\n

Among others, there\u2019s Leah (Sarah Pidgeon), who has an affair with an older man and is haunted by its abrupt ending; Fatin (Sophia Ali), a party girl weighed down by parental pressure; Rachel (Reign Edwards), an aspiring Olympic diver who pushes herself too hard; Dot (Shannon Berry), the caretaker for her ailing father; and Shelby (Mia Healey), a devout Christian pageant queen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have done a lot of strong female ensembles,\u201d says Harris. \u201cI\u2019ve done young adult and 30something women. I got very invested in reality shows [while making \u2018The Wilds\u2019] like one called \u2018Alone,\u2019 where you\u2019re just watching people try to survive by themselves. It\u2019s sort of amazing to see what it does to your psyche.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, the reason why I was so eager to do the show and explore it was the question it poses: \u2018Is it harder to survive on an island or your teenage years?\u2019 I think there\u2019s no real easy answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

As \u201cThe Wilds\u201d unfolds, it\u2019s revealed that a team of mysterious researchers are observing the girls during their time in the wilderness for unknown reasons (which are revealed as the show progresses). Rachel Griffiths (\u201cSix Feet Under,\u201d \u201cBrothers & Sisters\u201d) stars as Gretchen Klein, the duplicitous leader of the research team who\u2019s also a devoted pug owner. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the first page, the script<\/a> had an authenticity and a uniqueness and a depth in what it was trying to do,\u201d Griffiths, 51, tells The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just the most sensitive and wild study of female adolescence. Even though my character was barely there in the pilot, it\u2019s kind of like a Tinder date where you think at the end of the date that you actually might marry the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffiths, who lives with her family in her native Australia, says she also likes that the show feels suited to the current moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you choose a show, you kind of go, \u2018It\u2019s great, but I don\u2019t think people are going to want to see this in 2020.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know at the time that this show would be meeting this kind of a dystopian moment,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re all trying to survive 2020. We\u2019ve all lost so much and are kind of remembering what the world used to be and how we used to be able to see the people we love and go where we wanted. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the things that we used to take for granted.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
