When you\u2019re a pop superstar on the level of Taylor Swift<\/a> \u2014 rarefied air only shared by the likes of Adele and Beyonc\u00e9 \u2014 you don\u2019t do anything small.<\/p>\n

So instead of releasing a deluxe edition of \u201cFolkore\u201d \u2014 her surprise July release that\u2019s the best-selling LP of 2020 \u2014 the 30-year-old \u201cShake It Off\u201d singer dropped an entire \u201csister\u201d album, \u201cEvermore,\u201d out of nowhere on\u00a0Friday.<\/p>\n

Arriving at the beginning of Hanukkah, two weeks before Christmas and two days before the star\u2019s Dec. 13 birthday, it\u2019s the ultimate gift for Swifties.<\/p>\n

Consider your stocking stuffed.<\/p>\n

But whereas \u201cFolklore\u201d came as a revelation \u2014 its moody, alt-folk intimacy a radical departure from the peppy pop of 2019\u2019s \u201cLover\u201d \u2014 \u201cEvermore\u201d is, well, more of the same.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to say it\u2019s a bad thing \u2014 certainly not if the quarantine chill of \u201cFolklore\u201d was your jam. It\u2019s just that, like most sequels, it doesn\u2019t measure up to the original.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Godfather Part II,\u201d it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

If anything, \u201cEvermore\u201d brings to mind when Justin Timberlake<\/a> released \u201cThe 20\/20 Experience \u2014 2 of 2\u201d just six months after dropping \u201cThe 20\/20 Experience\u201d in 2013. The best stuff \u2014 \u201cSuit & Tie,\u201d \u201cMirrors\u201d \u2014 went on the first album; the second one got the outtakes.<\/p>\n

But with the artistic heights that Swift reached on \u201cFolklore\u201d \u2014 which received six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year \u2014 even her leftovers are solid, if not stellar. No doubt, T-Swizzle was in her singer-songwriter zone on 2020 lockdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The National\u2019s Aaron Dessner, who produced and co-wrote much of \u201cFolklore,\u201d returns for even more duty here. In fact, his band \u2014 with vocals by lead singer Matt Berninger \u2014 is featured on the wistful \u201cConey Island.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n
