Trading Pok\u00e9mon with friends in Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/em> is just one activity you can enjoy together\u2014you can battle each other, too! Learn how to start a Pok\u00e9mon battle using Sword and Shield\u2019s<\/em> Y-comm feature.<\/p>\n

There are three different types of online battles (all of which require a Nintendo Online subscript<\/a>ion): single battles, double battles, and multiplayer battles. Single and double battles are two-player battles, while a multiplayer battle will require four players.<\/p>\n

If you choose a single-player battle, both players will send one Pok\u00e9mon from their party out at a time. If you choose a double-player battle, both players will send two Pok\u00e9mon from their party out at a time, which effectively increases the level of difficulty.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve progressed to Route 2 in-game<\/a>, you will have access to the Y-comm feature, which opens access to all online features in the Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/em> universe, including trading and starting Pok\u00e9mon battles with your friends.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re worried about your friend being a higher or lower level, don\u2019t fret\u2014all players participating in the Pok\u00e9mon battle will have their Pok\u00e9mon synced to level 50.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019ve decided which battle-type you\u2019d like to participate in, open the \u201cY-comm Menu\u201d by pressing the \u201cY\u201d button on your right Joy-Con controller, and press \u201c+\u201d to connect to the internet. All participating contenders will need a Nintendo Online subscription and an internet connection to continue forward.<\/p>\n

If you want to play locally, you can connect between your friend and you by selecting the \u201cLink Battle\u201d option in the \u201cY-Comm Menu.\u201d The Y-Comm Menu is accessed by pressing the \u201cY\u201d button on your right Joy-Con controller any time after launching Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/em>\u00a0on your Switch.<\/p>\n

An internet connection is required to play with friends who are not nearby. With the \u201cY-Comm Menu\u201d open, press the \u201c+\u201d button on your right Joy-Con controller to connect to the internet. After you\u2019ve connected to the internet, select \u201cLink Battle\u201d from the \u201cY-Comm Menu,\u201d and press \u201c+\u201d on your right Joy-Con controller to set a link code.<\/p>\n

You and your friend will have to type the same eight-digit code to connect and battle with one another. After you\u2019ve set a code, close the menu and wait to be connected.\u00a0Setting a code will often connect partners faster, but this is unnecessary if your battle partner is nearby.<\/p>\n

The eight-digit code you choose doesn\u2019t matter\u2014it can be entirely random. Once you\u2019ve decided on a code, confirm it by pressing the A button on your Joy-Con controller. If you select one of the battle options and you do not first set a link code, you will be paired with a random player who happens to be looking for a random battle.<\/p>\n

After you\u2019ve set the link code and you have chosen your battle type, you will be redirected to the Y-Comm Menu. Be sure to share the code with your friend(s) to start the Pok\u00e9mon battle. If you want to cancel the Pok\u00e9mon battle, you can do so at any time by selecting another option from the Y-Comm Menu.<\/p>\n

Once the game matches you with someone, you can choose which Pok\u00e9mon you\u2019d like to place on the battlefield, either from your party or from your PC storage. You can also set battle rules\u2014you can choose to sync everyone\u2019s Pok\u00e9mon to 50, or start the battle unsynced.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve decided on the battle rules, press \u201cA\u201d on your right Joy-Con to confirm, and you will be taken to the Pok\u00e9mon selection screen. On this screen, you can choose to use Pok\u00e9mon from your current party, or you can assemble a team from the in-game Pok\u00e9mon Rotom PC, letting you choose whatever Pok\u00e9mon you have in your possession.<\/p>\n

If you set the rules to set all Pok\u00e9mon to level 50, any Pok\u00e9mon you choose (including the opposing team) will be set to level 50. You can also see the Pok\u00e9mon that your friend chose (on the left).<\/p>\n

Choose your team and confirm by pressing \u201cA\u201d on your right Joy-Con controller to continue to the final screen. You can make any last-minute changes on this screen. If you\u2019re ready, press \u201cA\u201d to begin the Pok\u00e9mon battle.<\/p>\n

An arena will appear, and the battle will commence. There aren\u2019t any rewards for beating your friends in a Pok\u00e9mon battle (except bragging rights), and at the end of the battle, you can choose to do a rematch with the same set of rules, or with different battle rules.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not interested in another match, press \u201cB\u201d on your right Joy-Con controller to end the connection. There are plenty of options to choose from whether you\u2019re looking to climb to the top of the standings in the Battle Stadium or to just have fun with your friends in Pok\u00e9mon Sword and Shield<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
