A gunman opened fire during a Christmas show with singing carolers on the front steps of St. John the Divine Cathedral in Harlem on Sunday, police and reports said.<\/p>\n

The gunman, who was in a red jacket, had been firing into the air, law-enforcement sources said. He was shot by a responding Emergency Services Unit officer and is in critical condition and not expected to live, sources said.<\/p>\n

Police had received about a dozen 911 calls from the scene saying shots were fired around 3:45 p.m. \u2014 prompting chaos as people fled in terror and took cover behind cars, sources said.<\/p>\n

Officers outside the famed church at West 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue saw the gunman firing his weapon, an NYPD rep told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was shooting it up in the air and toward police,\u201d a high-ranking department source said.<\/p>\n

Officers fired at the man, and he was hit and taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where he was clinging to life, sources said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The shooting came during a scheduled free Christmas carol performance on the steps of the historic church by the Cathedral Choir.<\/p>\n

The performance was the cathedral\u2019s first public event since the coronavirus pandemic hit the Big App<\/a>le.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n
