An Oregon man was sentenced to more than two years in prison for spitting on a police officer and claiming he was infected with COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Daniel Ray Stubblefield, 36, pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment and menacing in the March 23 incident, The Bulletin reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Police in Bend, Ore., had been responding to a report that Stubblefield was intoxicated and assaulting someone.<\/p>\n

Though that person decided not to press charges, officers took Stubblefield into custody on two arrest warrants involving different cases.<\/p>\n

Then, cops said, Stubblefield\u00a0told an officer he\u2019d tested positive for coronavirus \u2014 before coughing loudly and spitting on his face four times. <\/p>\n

The cop later tested negative for the virus.<\/p>\n

Stubblefield\u2019s attorneys said he\u2019s long struggled with mental health and alcohol issues. <\/p>\n

He\u2019s had 28 prior criminal convictions. As part of his plea deal, three other pending cases against him were dismissed.<\/p>\n

At his sentencing in Deschutes County Circuit Court on Thursday, Stubblefield said he was embarrassed by his multiple run-ins with the law. <\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time, I can\u2019t even remember these things when I\u2019m told what I\u2019ve done,\u201d he told Judge Alison Emerson. <\/p>\n

\u201cI just wake up in jail. I\u2019ve been trying very hard to beat this addiction. I\u2019m sorry to all that I\u2019ve hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

The judge wished him good luck behind bars. <\/p>\n

\u201dHopefully there will be some changes that come about, because I think there is redemption on the other side,\u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
