That\u2019s how I feel about Adobe Photoshop\u2019s current undo\/redo keyboard shortcuts. Here\u2019s how to bring back the old\u2014and much better\u2014classic ones.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Photoshops_Old_Undo_Shortcuts_Worked\"><\/span>How Photoshop\u2019s Old Undo Shortcuts Worked<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A quick refresher: For years,\u00a0 Photoshop had a really handy undo\/redo keyboard shortcut set up. To undo something, you could press Control+Z (Command+Z on a Mac.) Pressing it again would undo the undo. In other words, it would redo the step you\u2019d just undone. This was great for quickly comparing changes and edits you\u2019d made to your images.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you could turn off a load of different layers, add a mask, or paint in some details, then use Control+Z (or Command+Z) to quickly toggle the changes you\u2019d made on and off again so you could directly compare their effects. You could use the shortcut Control+Alt+Z (or Command+Option+Z on a Mac) to step back through the different document history states. Control+Shift+Z (or Command+Shift+Z on a Mac) would bring you forward through them again. Simple!<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, while these keyboard shortcuts were beloved by many, they do break the almost-universal undo\/redo keyboard shortcut convention. So, in the latest versions of Photoshop, Adobe has gone with the more traditional Control+Z (or Command+Z on a Mac) to undo as many steps as you want, and Control+Shift+Z (or Command+Shift+Z on a Mac) to redo each step again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Improve (Almost) Any Digital Photo, Without Auto-Enhance<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a keyboard shortcut to toggle to the previous history state (Control+Alt+Z or Command+Option+Z). However, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/community.adobe.com\/t5\/photoshop\/history-state-toggling-aka-undo-redo-or-before-after-has-suffered-from-nerfing\/td-p\/10356813?page=1\">the feature isn\u2019t quite the same<\/a> and doesn\u2019t work in all situations.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, it\u2019s pretty clear I like things the old way\u2014though I can see a case for the new way.
