When can you get a shot?<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"column column--full article__content\">\n<div id=\"js-article__body\" class=\"article__body article-wrap at16-col16 barrons-article-wrap\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0000099723\">\n<div class=\"barrons-article-ad-wrapper\">\n<div data-track=\"barrons-article-ad-wrap\" class=\"barrons-article-ad sticky_item\">\n<div class=\"barrons-main-article-ad-target sticky_target body_ad\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       The first U.S. authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine on Friday provided a ray of hope in a pandemic that has killed almost 300,000 Americans, but limited vaccine supply means initial doses will go to the highest-priority groups \u2014\u00a0and the average American will likely have to sit tight for a few months.<\/p>\n<p> A vaccine candidate developed by Germany\u2019s BioNTech<br \/>\n        BNTX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214419716\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-6.75%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and commercialized by Pfizer<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-3.02%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       started arriving at hospitals nationwide Monday, following its emergency-use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration three days earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       One of the country\u2019s first vaccine doses to be administered outside of a clinical trial went to Sandra Lindsay, a critical-care nurse in Queens, N.Y., which was devastated by COVID-19 cases and deaths in the pandemic\u2019s early months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this marks the beginning to the end of a very painful time in our history,\u201d Lindsay said after receiving her shot during a livestreamed <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> conference with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. \u201cI want to instill public confidence that the vaccine is safe \u2014 we\u2019re in a pandemic, and so we all need to do our part to put an end to the pandemic and to not give up so soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her inoculation was in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s recent recommendation that health-care workers and long-term-care facility residents \u2014 two populations at particularly high risk for contracting COVID-19 \u2014 be first in line to receive vaccine doses. The CDC\u2019s Dec. 3 guidance was based on a recommendation from the independent Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) panel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recommendations were made with these goals in mind: decrease death and serious disease as much as possible; preserve functioning of society; [and] reduce the extra burden COVID-19 is having on people already facing disparities,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations.html\" class=\"icon none\">the CDC notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Essential workers, people with chronic health conditions that put them at greater risk for severe COVID-19, and adults 65 and older are also expected to be prioritized for vaccine doses going forward.<\/p>\n<p>But for the average American, \u201cthe earliest will likely be in the spring, but more likely over the summer,\u201d Sandra Albrecht, a Columbia University assistant professor of epidemiology and chief epidemiologist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>-communication project <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dearpandemic.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">Dear Pandemic<\/a>, previously told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetPullQuote\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018The goal is for everyone to be able to easily get a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as large quantities of vaccine are available. Gen. Paul Ostrowski, the director of supply, production and distribution for Operation Warp Speed, the government\u2019s vaccine development and distribution effort, said in an MSNBC interview last month that by June, \u201c100% of Americans that want the vaccine will have had the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe goal is for everyone to be able to easily get a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as large quantities of vaccine are available,\u201d the CDC says. \u201cAs vaccine supply increases but remains limited, ACIP will expand the groups recommended for vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p> The Pfizer-BioNTech candidate, which requires that recipients return for a second shot three weeks after their initial dose, showed 95% efficacy in a late-stage clinical trial.
