\n

The fenced-off, booby-trapp<\/a>ed \u201cautonomous zone\u201d in Oregon has finally been dismantled after Portland\u2019s mayor brokered a deal with protesters \u2014 and apologized to them.<\/p>\n

The Twitter<\/a> handle for those leading the protests at the \u201cRed House on Mississippi\u201d started calling for \u201ccomrades\u201d to help \u201ctake these barricades down\u201d<\/a> Sunday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur work is not going unseen!\u201d the protesters tweeted<\/a>, hailing a deal between the city and the Kinneys, a black family whose eviction sparked the three-block barricade covered in Antifa and anti-cop graffiti.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mayor has promised the Kinney family that they will not raid Red House as long as the barricades are taken down by Monday night,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n

The \u201cautonomous zone\u201d was set up on Tuesday though protests have been held at the site for the past three months.<\/p>\n

Most of the barricades were gone by late Sunday, according to The Oregonian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mayor Ted Wheeler\u2019s office confirmed that a deal had been struck, though it was not clear if the house was being sold back to the Kinneys, the family that was evicted after defaulting on a second mortgage taken out to pay a relative\u2019s legal fees in a criminal case.<\/p>\n

Wheeler did, however, write to the family to \u201capologize\u201d for his own earlier tweet in which he authorized cops to \u201cuse all lawful means to end the illegal occupation,\u201d according to the letter shared with The Oregonian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not intend to attract attention that results in threats of harm and violence to your family or that escalated tensions in our community,\u201d he wrote to the family, the paper said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody should be subjected to this kind of stress and harm, and we apologize for the role our tweets played in this.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Wheeler told the paper that with \u201cmeasured optimism\u201d he hoped they could \u201cmove toward the next steps to advance the safety and well-being of the family and the safety of the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Activist Mac Smiff called it a clear \u201cwin\u201d for the protesters, who violently clashed with police last week as authorities tried to take back the house.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a whole new level of progress and the impacts are going to reverberate around the nation,\u201d Smiff told The Oregonian.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t like what we\u2019ve seen before. It\u2019s a negotiation and a win, and that\u2019s something we\u2019re just not used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

The current owner has offered to sell the house back to the Kinneys for the $260,000 he paid for it in a foreclosure sale, as well as the $20,000 it has cost him since then. <\/p>\n

So far the offer does not appear to have been accepted \u2014 even though more than $309,000 has been raised for the family.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
