\n What\u2019s in a name? For the state of Rhode Island, years of acrimony over an official designation with connotations of slavery.<\/p>\n

But change is brewing in the union\u2019s smallest state, as Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday taking the \u2018first steps\u2019 to change the state\u2019s full name: \u2018The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.\u2019<\/p>\n

The \u2018plantations\u2019 portion has come under increased scrutiny following widespread protests after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.<\/p>\n

The order, Executive Order 20-48, will change the name to just \u2018Rhode Island\u2019 in official communications from the governor\u2019s office \u2013 including future executive orders, citations, and stationary letterheads. It also calls on all state executive agencies to remove \u2018plantations\u2019 from their websites.<\/p>\n

The order does not change the state\u2019s official name permanently \u2014 that will require voters to amend the Rhode Island Constitution, the order states.<\/p>\n

The state Legislature has indicated it will move forward with the referendum after the Rhode Island Senate passed a measure last week calling for a statewide vote on the name change.<\/p>\n

The bill was introduced by Rhode Island\u2019s sole black senator, Harold Metts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever the meaning of the term \u2018plantations\u2019 in the context of Rhode Island\u2019s history, it carries a horrific connotation when considering the tragic and racist history of our nation,\u201d Metts said in a statement to the Providence Journal.<\/p>\n

Previous attempts to change the state\u2019s name have failed after the issue was put on the ballot. In 2010, almost 78 percent of voters opposed a constitutional amendment removing \u2018Providence Plantations\u2019 from the state\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

The recent push for a name change may have started when an online petition began circulating following Floyd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome Rhode Islanders pride themselves on living in the \u2018smallest state with the longest name.\u2019 But, the history of how we got this name is often forgotten,\u201d the petition reads. It currently has almost 7,500 signatures.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
