Georgia GOP senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue released a forceful statement on Monday declaring their opposition to any potential renaming of the Atlanta Braves.<\/p>\n

The statement follows news<\/a> Sunday that the Cleveland Indians will join the Washington Redskins in dropping their 105-year-old moniker amid pressure from Native American groups who say the name and imagery is demeaning.<\/p>\n

Activists are calling for the Braves to follow suit.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe adamantly oppose any effort to rename the Atlanta Braves, one of our states most storied and successful sports franchises,\u201d said Loeffler and Perdue, who are facing fierce re-election challenges which will decide the party that controls the Senate.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only are the Braves a Georgia institution \u2014 with a history spanning 54 years in Atlanta \u2014 they\u2019re an American institution,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Braves\u2019 name honors our nation\u2019s Native American heritage, which should not be erased \u2014 and under no circumstances should one of the most celebrated teams in sports cave to the demands of the cancel culture and the radical left,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The team\u2019s logo \u2014 a Native American man and a tomahawk \u2014 has been an issue since the 1970s and in 2013 Braves officials retired depictions of the male warrior.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/a> reported that the Braves were unlikely to change their name but other changes could be made.<\/p>\n

In a July statement, chairman Terry McGuirk said: \u201cWe are so proud of our team\u2019s name, and our expectation is that we will always be the Atlanta Braves.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team last year developed a cultural working group with the Eastern Band of the Cherokees where they \u201ccollaborate on important issues related to culture, education, and outreach,\u201d a statement read.<\/p>\n

President Trump on Sunday criticized Cleveland\u2019s decision to drop its name, calling it \u201ccancel culture at work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh no! What is going on? This is not good news, even for \u2018Indians\u2019. Cancel culture at work!,\u201d he wrote.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
