NYPD cops have been ignoring an official directive and abandoning their coronavirus face masks amid the violent protests over George Floyd\u2019s killing \u2014 even though a top official took on the city\u2019s health commissioner to get the protective gear.<\/p>\n

Dramatic images from recent street clashes show cops with surgical masks pulled beneath their chins or not wearing any at all while up close and personal with demonstrators whose mouths and noses are likewise fully exposed.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio has warned that the ongoing rallies \u2014 which entered their sixth day on Tuesday \u2014 could lead to a spike in cases of COVID-19, and he\u2019s urged demonstrators to \u201cstay home,\u201d saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve made your point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chief of Department Terence Monahan has also been repeatedly photographed without a mask in public, including when he held hands and kneeled in solidarity with unmasked protesters in Washington Square Park on Monday.<\/p>\n

Last month, The Post exclusively revealed that Monahan had to app<\/a>eal directly to City Hall when Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot ignored his desperate plea for 500,000 masks to protect NYPD cops and civilian employees from the deadly respiratory ailment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t give two rats\u2019 asses about your cops,\u201d Barbot told Monahan at the time.<\/p>\n

Barbot publicly apologized for the remark following The Post\u2019s expose.<\/p>\n

During a May 22 meeting of the City Council\u2019s Public Safety Committee, NYPD Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters Oleg Chernyavsky said cops were under orders to wear masks as per \u201cthe protocol that we\u2019ve instituted\u201d to respond to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they\u2019re interacting with the public, they\u2019re obligated to wear masks,\u201d Chernyavsky testified.<\/p>\n

A high-ranking NYPD source said the situation surrounding the protests made it impractical for cops to wear face masks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not wearing them because they can\u2019t breathe. It\u2019s hot. You\u2019re standing there for a long time,\u201d the police official said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose masks aren\u2019t for running. They\u2019re heavy. The more you walk and move it\u2019s harder to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another NYPD source said, \u201cCops aren\u2019t wearing masks with their helmets because it fogs up visors and it\u2019s hard to breathe when you\u2019re fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither City Hall nor the NYPD immedia<\/a>tely returned requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
