HBO Max<\/strong> is joining Netflix in acceding to comedia<\/a>n\u00a0Dave Chappelle<\/strong>\u2018s request to remove\u00a0Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/em><\/strong> from their streaming services. The WarnerMedia streaming platform has confirmed that it will pull the sketch comedy series<\/a> from its platform by the end of the month.<\/p>\n

HBO and HBO Max chief content officer\u00a0Casey Bloys<\/strong> confirmed\u00a0with\u00a0Variety<\/a>\u00a0that, starting January 1,\u00a0Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/em> will no longer be streaming on the platform, at the request of series creator and star Dave Chappelle. With this new development, only\u00a0the ViacomCBS-owned streamer CBS All Access will feature the series in its library. Bloys said in a statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a conversation with Dave. I won\u2019t get into it, but it\u2019s very clear that it\u2019s a very unique and specific and emotional issue he\u2019s got. So at the end of the year, at the end of this year, December 31, we\u2019re going to honor his request and take the show down.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

HBO Max follows in the footsteps of Netflix\u2019s removal of\u00a0Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/em> from its streaming platform at the end of November, in a quick reaction to Chappelle\u2019s\u00a0Instagram<\/a>\u00a0demanding that streaming services pull the sketch comedy show as he did\u00a0not approve the decision or get paid for it. According to Chappelle, the issue stems from his exit from\u00a0Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/em> after\u00a0its abbreviated three-season run on Comedy Central, for which he \u201cnever got paid\u201d for his lucrative contract with the network.\u00a0Chappelle urged his fans not to stream Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/em> on the streaming platforms that featured it, because series owner ViacomCBS has not paid him for licensing out the Comedy Central hit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t have to pay me because I signed the contract,\u201d Chappelle said. \u201cBut is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal \u2019cause I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn\u2019t think so either.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of\u00a0Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/em> airing, between 2003 and 2006, neither Chappelle nor Comedy Central could likely have anticipated streaming platforms to be such a major player, which has likely led to this gray area in Chappelle\u2019s contract that has caused this upset. But while it was no surprise the Netflix would pull the series, given the streamer\u2019s good relationship with the comedian, it\u2019s a little more unexpected that HBO Max would accede, especially in the wake of the WarnerMedia streaming platform\u2019s controversial part in debuting the upcoming Warner Bros. 2021 slate. Does this mean that HBO Max will have to field requests from directors who weren\u2019t notified of their films heading straight to streaming? That\u2019s extremely unlikely, but this whole saga just gives more insight to the messiness of navigating streaming rights.<\/p>\n

Chappelle\u2019s Show<\/i>\u00a0will continue to stream on HBO Max through December 31, 2020.
