Hilary Duff has confirmed that the \u201cLizzie McGuire\u201d reboot is officially dead.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Duff, 33, posted a long note<\/a> on her Instagram explaining the situation. \u201cI know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work, but sadly it isn\u2019t going to happ<\/a>en,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

A Disney spokesperson confirmed to The Post that the show is on hold \u2014 for now.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Lizzie McGuire\u2019 fans have high expectations for any new stories.\u00a0Unless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we\u2019ve decided to hold off, and today, we informed the cast\u2019s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series<\/a>,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

The show first aired on Disney from 2001 to 2004, with \u201cThe Lizzie McGuire Movie\u201d hitting theaters in 2003. Its life was short, but the adventures of Lizzie and her friends Lalaine (Miranda Sanchez) and Gordo (Adam Lamberg) were impressionable to a generation of millennials. In August 2019, it was announced that a reboot series following Lizzie as an adult was hitting Disney+. But ever since, it\u2019s been a strange saga besieged by setbacks, most of which were alluded to by Duff herself.<\/p>\n

First, TV writer Terri Minsky departed in January, and the show went on hiatus. Minsky, who helmed the original, was executive producing it along with Duff.<\/p>\n

The problem was rumored to be that Disney+ wanted to make it more G-rated, while Duff wanted to make it more realistic to the life of a woman in her 20s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show,\u201d a Disney spokesperson told Variety<\/a> at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then in February, the \u201cLove, Simon\u201d spinoff show \u201cLove, Victor\u201d moved from its planned platform of Disney+ to Hulu. Duff used that to hint at behind-the-scenes drama for \u201cLizzie McGuire.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an Instagram Story, she shared a screenshot of an article with the headline \u201c\u2019Love, Simon\u2019 TV Show Pulled From Disney+ as It\u2019s Not \u2018Family-Friendly.\u2019\u201d Duff circled the words \u201cfamily-friendly\u201d and wrote, \u201cSounds familiar.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the end of February, she wrote another post on her Instagram begging Disney+ to move the \u201cLizzie\u201d reboot to Hulu along with \u201cLove, Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old\u2019s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. It\u2019s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen \/ teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable. It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu,\u201d she wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But now, that dream is gone. In her announcement about the reboot being dead in the water, she wrote, \u201cI want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It\u2019s what the character deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n

She concluded with a cheeky signoff, quoting her song \u201cHey Now\u201d and alluding to the difficult year of 2020. \u201cI\u2019m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn\u2019t align,\u201d she wrote. \u201cHey now, this is what 2020 is made of.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
