The Disney+\u00a0Lizzie McGuire<\/em><\/strong> revival, which was set to feature\u00a0Hilary Duff<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>reprising her role as everyone\u2019s favorite fourth wall-breaking Disney Channel teen, is officially dead after the search for a new showrunner turned up empty following the firing of creator and revival showrunner Terri Minsky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hilary Duff confirmed in an Instagram announcement<\/a> on Wednesday that the Lizzie McGuire<\/em> revival is not moving forward at Disney+. \u201cI\u2019ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life,\u201d Duff said, breaking the news<\/a> to fans who held out hope that the show could survive the removal of its creator and behind-the-scenes clashes over its creative direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone\u2019s best efforts, it isn\u2019t going to happ<\/a>en,\u201d Duff continued. \u201cI want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It\u2019s what the character deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Duff is obliquely referring to in her statement about the portrayal of Lizzie McGuire being \u201chonest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today\u201d stems from the clashes over the \u201cfamily-friendly\u201d appeal of the\u00a0Lizzie McGuire<\/em> revival. The revival of the beloved Disney Channel show has been in the works at Disney+ since 2019, but things were brought to a halt at the beginning of 2020 when series<\/a> creator and revival showrunner\u00a0Terri Minsk was fired two episodes into production. While it wasn\u2019t confirmed what led to Disney+ removing Minsky, the behind-the-scenes chatter was that Duff and Minsky wanted to do a more adult version of\u00a0Lizzie McGuire<\/em> for the revival, while Disney wanted it to appeal to kids and families, as the original series did. Which would make sense were Lizzie still a 13-year-old kid \u2014 but as played by a 33-year-old Duff, it only makes sense for the show to tackle more adult topics.<\/p>\n

Duff has indicated on social media<\/a> that the \u201cfamily-friendly\u201d designation was a big source of conflict with the\u00a0Lizzie McGuire<\/em> team and Disney+ \u2014 posting a screenshot of\u00a0Love, Victor<\/em>\u2018s move to Hulu over the same reasons \u2014 and ended up publicly asking Disney to move the series to Hulu<\/a>, which appears to not have happened. The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s Lesley Goldberg reports<\/a> that Disney+ did look for a new showrunner to replace Minsky, but the search turned up empty. So, cancelation it was.<\/p>\n

\u201cLizzie McGuire\u00a0<\/em>fans have high expectations for any new stories,\u201d a Disney spokesperson said in a statement to Variety<\/a>. \u201cUnless and until we are confident we can meet those expectations, we\u2019ve decided to hold off and today, we informed the cast\u2019s representatives that we are not moving forward with the planned series.\u201d
