\n The city will begin cracking down on illegal firework activity that has ramped up in recent weeks \u2014 but pyromaniacs themselves won\u2019t be targeted because it\u2019s \u201cnot a good use of police\u2019s time and energy,\u201d Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

De Blasio announced the formation of a task force \u2014 comprised of NYPD Intelligence Bureau officers, FDNY Fire Marshals and officers from the Sheriff\u2019s Bureau of Criminal Investigation \u2014 that instead go after suppliers and distributors of fireworks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the more profound issue is going to the root of the cause, cutting off the supply,\u201d the mayor said at his daily press briefing.<\/p>\n

Asked why authorities won\u2019t be going after individuals setting off the fireworks, the mayor said, \u201cA lot of cases you can\u2019t intervene when someone shoots off fireworks and they\u2019re gone. It\u2019s just not a good use of police\u2019s time and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio said he\u2019d rather the NYPD focuses on the recent spate of shootings and \u201cthe most fundamental issues of public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf any NYPD officer thinks something needs to be intervened on, that\u2019s part of their professional discretion,\u201d he added. \u201cBut the focus right now is on dealing with serious and violent crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Complaints of illegal firework use has skyrocketed, with 8,967 reported to the city\u2019s 311 system from June 1 through Sunday, compared to just 28 complaints logged in the same period last year.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
