“#NYS Assembly cancels remote hearing due to Winter Storm Gail<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u201csnow\u201d excuse!<\/p>\n

The New York State Assembly postponed a hearing scheduled for Thursday \u201cdue to weather\u201d \u2014 even though it was set to take place remotely.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Speaker Carl Heastie said that the meeting \u2014 about mayoral control of New York City schools \u2014 had to be pushed off \u201cbecause staff needs to be in the (State Capitol) to run the virtual component.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Big App<\/a>le schoolkids won\u2019t catch the same break as lawmakers.<\/p>\n

All 1.1 million of them will be learning from home during the anticipated snowstorm, the Department of Education said.<\/p>\n

Assembly Education Committee Chairman Michael Benedetto chuckled when asked about getting a snow day due to the postponed hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe schools are open but we\u2019re getting a snow day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Benedetto (D-Bronx) said the meeting was pushed off for the safety of Assembly staffers, who had to go to the State Capitol building to prepare for the remote hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are people who have to put this together. For their safety, we postponed. We\u2019ll take up the issue early next year,\u201d\u00a0 he said.<\/p>\n

Assemblyman Mike Reilly (R-Staten Island) said that while he was \u201cdisappointed,\u201d it was understandable that the hearing was postponed for the staff\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

However, he said he would push to get another meeting on the books before the end of the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many parents, educators and advocates who want to share their thoughts on mayoral control,\u201d Reilly said.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cFixing mayoral control is a priority of mine, especially with the upcoming 2021 mayoral election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawmakers were going to examine whether mayoral control of the NYC school system should be extended or gutted when the law is up for renewal in June of 2022.<\/p>\n

Mayoral school control was initially championed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and approved by the state Legislature in 2002, then renewed several times since then,\u00a0including last year.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio also has been a big booster.<\/p>\n

The law expires after de Blasio leaves office, meaning school control will be an issue for the next mayor, who will have to negotiate extending or revise the school control law with the state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n

Asked about the issue on Wednesday, Cuomo said that \u201cthe assembly is doing a hearing on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d have to pass a law next year so we have plenty to talk about right now, and we haven\u2019t gotten to the topic with the legislature,\u201d Cuomo said. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut .. especially because the Assembly is predominantly from New York City, I\u2019m sure the Assembly is going to have strong feelings on that and then we\u2019ll have a conversation, I just haven\u2019t had that conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n
