On paper, the Nets app<\/a>ear to be as good as any team in the NBA this season with the return of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.<\/p>\n

But according to former superstars Reggie Miller and Chris Webber, who are now NBA analysts for TNT, the Nets need to see the value in the team\u2019s supporting cast if they want to have legitimate hopes of winning a championship.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always hear people say there\u2019s only one basketball, they got to share the basketball,\u201d Miller, a five-time All-Star, said of Durant and Irving on a Zoom call Wednesday. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s not going to be the problem because they\u2019ve always wanted to play with one another and they\u2019ve only wanted for each other to succeed. The question is going to be, the [Caris] LeVerts and the [Spencer] Dinwiddies, can they get those guys involved? I\u2019m not so much worried about Kyrie and Durant, and how that union will be. How can they get Joe Harris involved?<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they want to be successful and they want to win the East, and they want to potentially win a championship, they\u2019re going to need those others to play at a high level. I\u2019m not worried about the future Hall of Famers on that team, it\u2019s the role players that are going to be key for the success for the Brooklyn Nets.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller said he expects both Durant and Irving to average \u201cclose to 30 points a game<\/a>.\u201d However, the Pacers legend believe the Nets\u2019 success will be measured by how much their teammates contribute.<\/p>\n

\u201cSixty [points] won\u2019t win, 60 won\u2019t win it for you,\u201d Miller quipped.<\/p>\n

Webber agreed that it would be up to players such as LeVert, Dinwiddie, Harris, DeAndre Jordan and Jarrett Allen to set the Nets apart in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s because the Nets have such a talented roster that Webber thinks first-year coach Steve Nash has the toughest coaching job in the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think he\u2019s ready, but I do think that there can be issues in the locker room that the average coach or veteran coach has never had before with this team, depending on personalities,\u201d said Webber, who played for six different teams over the course of 15 NBA seasons. \u201cBecause you have so many, you have two great players that the media<\/a>, including myself, hang on their words. That can affect the coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller cited Nash\u2019s strong relationship with both Durant and Irving as a major advantage for the Hall of Fame point guard. He then pointed to the memorable relationship between former Bulls head coach Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan during Chicago\u2019s six-championship dynasty from 1991-98.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe already has the two superstars\u2019 attention,\u201d Miller said of Nash. \u201cTo me, and we saw this with Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan, Phil was never afraid to coach, to get on Michael Jordan. And the rest of the guys saw that. It trickles down. So he can\u2019t tiptoe around those guys, but also too, you don\u2019t want to alienate them as well. So it\u2019s a fine balance that Steve is going to have to walk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The Nets announced the signings of free agents Elie Okobo and Kaiser Gates Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Both Okobo and Gates signed Exhibit 10 contracts, a source told The Post\u2019s Brian Lewis, meaning they agreed to one-year deals that the Nets can convert into two-way contracts prior to the start of the regular season.<\/p>\n

Okobo spent the first two seasons of his career with the Suns, where he appeared in a total of 108 games with 19 starts. The 22-year-old French point guard saw action in 55 games in 2019-20, averaging four points in 13.1 minutes.<\/p>\n

The 6-foot-7 Gates, who went undrafted out of Xavier in 2018, comes to Brooklyn after spending the 2019-20 season with the Celtics\u2019 G-League affiliate.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
