A Canadian father endured painful hours under a tattoo needle to help his \u201cself-conscious\u201d son accept a birthmark on his torso.<\/p>\n

Edmonton-based Derek Prue Sr was inspired to get inked after noticing his son did not want to take off his shirt when he went swimming.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew he was self-conscious and that made me want just to show him that he wasn\u2019t the only one, like, we both have the same mark,\u201d Prue said. The inking was much more intense than he anticipated, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt good to do it. It\u2019s a long process to do it. I thought it was going to be a few hours. It was, like, 30.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prue unveiled the surprise to his son, also named Derek, as he played in a hotel pool earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe took off his shirt and then there was a huge tattoo of my birthmark there,\u201d the 8-year-old boy recalled, adding he felt happ<\/a>y \u2013 and a little confused.<\/p>\n

The dad\u2019s red-wine colored tattoo covers part of his chest and belly and extends under his left arm. The dad is much larger than the son; so the tattoo had to be larger, too, to be in proportion.<\/p>\n

No matter where on the body, the inking hurts, said the artist, Tony Gibbert, owner of Juicy Quill Tattoo Studio in Stony Plain, Alberta.<\/p>\n

\u201cPretty much everywhere he wants to get a tattoo is all, like, just pain,\u201d Gibbert said, laughing. \u201cNone of it\u2019s easy.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
