But instead of admitting that \u201cfor all of Trump\u2019s flaws in managing the pandemic, he is also responsible for ending it,\u201d Biden seems out to save \u201cthat credit for himself.\u201d The new president can deliver on \u201chis promise to reach out to his opponent\u2019s supporters and bring Americans together\u201d by resolving to \u201cgive credit where credit is due \u2014 and pledge to continue Operation Warp Speed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Northwestern University administrators proved themselves \u201cclueless .\u2009.\u2009. about what academic freedom means and how to protect it,\u201d thunders Charles Lipson at RealClearPolitics<\/a>: They responded to public criticism of ex-lecturer Joseph Epstein\u2019s Wall Street Journal column attacking non-MDs\u2019 use of \u201cDr.,\u201d including by Jill Biden, with a statement that, after \u201c10 pro forma words of support for academic freedom,\u201d turned \u201cto the real goal: lacerating Epstein.\u201d It announced it \u201cstrongly disagrees\u201d with his supposedly \u201cmisogynistic views.\u201d Universities should \u201cremain silent on nearly all \u00adpolitical issues\u201d so as \u201cto encourage students and faculty to express their views.\u201d Condemn away as individuals, but not in any \u201cofficial capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Trump Is Right About Taiwan<\/strong><\/p>\n

America can\u2019t afford \u201ca third-term of a Barack Obama policy on the Western Pacific,\u201d advise Patrick Mendis and Corey Lee Bell at The National \u00adInterest<\/a>; better for the Biden team to follow the Trump example and understand \u201cthe weight that China places on the Taiwan issue.\u201d Taiwan is key to America \u201cretaining both its global standing and national interests in the \u00adPacific region, and to heading off challenges elsewhere around the world\u201d; letting China disrupt the balance of power would be \u201cdisastrous\u201d for the whole \u201cdemocratic world.\u201d In reality, \u201cTaiwan effectively needs to be \u2018kept-in-play\u2019 for both sides.\u201d Biden must avoid any \u201cU-turn based on naive hopes that goodwill can temper President Xi\u2019s growing and increasingly impatient desire to pressure Taiwan into capitulation.\u201d If he stays the course without Trump\u2019s idiosyncratic obsessions, Biden can be \u201cfar more formidable than his predecessor.\u201d<\/p>\n
