Although it\u2019s been 25 years since Selena Quintanilla\u2019s untimely death<\/a>, the endless love between the Queen of Tejano music and her husband, Chris P\u00e9rez, is still alive and well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never had the kind of love that I had with Selena,\u201d P\u00e9rez, 51, told The Post of his late wife, who was gunned down at 23 by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Sald\u00edvar, in March 1995.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Selena\u2019s] way of being made me realize the power in being vulnerable,\u201d the Grammy-award winning songwriter and guitar player said. \u201cLike no matter what, you\u2019re going to take your heart out, figuratively, and get on one knee and hand it to that other person. And I\u2019d never done that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Selena and P\u00e9rez\u2019s\u00a0amor prohibido<\/em> \u2014 her father initially disapp<\/a>roved of the relationship \u2014 captivated global audiences in the 1997 blockbuster biopic \u201cSelena,\u201d starring Jennifer Lopez. Now, their undying adoration is back in the spotlight in the acclaimed release this month of Netflix\u2019s \u201cSelena: The Series,\u201d featuring actress\u00a0Christian Serratos in the titular role.<\/p>\n

However, P\u00e9rez, who served for six years as lead guitarist of his wife\u2019s family band, Selena y Los Dinos, was neither consulted nor involved in the making of the biographical drama, produced by Selena\u2019s father and sister, Abraham and Suzette Quintanilla.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can line us all up, the guys in the band and the members of her family, and ask us to tell the full story of all the things we experienced together, and it\u2019d be the same story but told from a bunch of different perspectives. And [\u2018Selena: The Series\u2019] is their perspective,\u201d P\u00e9rez said, noting his exclusion from the Netflix project is likely due to former legal contentions with his estranged in-laws.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t spoken since the lawsuit,\u201d P\u00e9rez said, referring to litigation Abraham Quintanilla filed against him in 2016. The suit was a successful attempt to block a television adaptation of a memoir P\u00e9rez penned in tribute to his slain sweetheart in 2012 entitled: \u201cTo Selena, With Love.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a believer that if you truly ever did love somebody you don\u2019t just stop loving them,\u201d P\u00e9rez continued. \u201cSo, there\u2019s always going to be that love and respect [for her family]. But things are not as good as they should be and that hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n

P\u00e9rez married Venessa Villanueva, who he met through a mutual friend, in 2001, six years after Selena\u2019s death. The couple welcomed two children, Cassie, 22, and Noah, 15, before divorcing in 2008.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although fully engaged in his new life as a father, musician, and more recently, a hot-pepper-sauce entrepreneur, P\u00e9rez continues to feel the pangs of Selena\u2019s passing every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got remarried, that was me trying to downplay [Selena\u2019s death] in my life. It was too painful. I never talked about [Selena\u2019s death],\u201d he said. \u201cGetting remarried and starting my new life was a way to get over losing her. I thought getting remarried would help, and it did. But the pain is still there. It\u2019ll always be there.\u201d<\/p>\n

P\u00e9rez fondly remembers being in an \u201camazing place\u201d of love with Selena<\/a> in the days leading up to her murder. Sald\u00edvar shot her outside of a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Texas. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe eloped on April 2, 1992, and she died March 31, 1995. So she died two days before our third wedding anniversary,\u201d P\u00e9rez said. \u201cSo, every year around that time, I try to not let my heart and mind think about her too much because the feelings are just too intense. It\u2019s still a constant struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the agony of his loss, P\u00e9rez said he does not feel any lingering animosity towards Sald\u00edvar \u2014 who\u2019s currently serving her life sentence at the Mountain View Unit, a maximum security women\u2019s prison in Gatesville, Texas. She will be eligible for parole in 2025.<\/p>\n

Forever celebrating her life and legacy<\/a>, P\u00e9rez was scheduled to perform at the SXSW Selena for Sanctuary charity concert in Texas earlier this year; however, the showcase was cancelled due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

But he still sees his late love in his dreams. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt happens on a daily basis. She comes to me \u2026 either when I\u2019m sleeping or in a daydream,\u201d said P\u00e9rez, who is open to the possibility of one day writing another book about life with, and after, Selena. He said she encourages him to \u201ckeep your head up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear her talking to me all the time,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd even though she was taken from us at such a young age so many years ago, when I hear her spirit speaking to me, I hear who I believe she would be now, today, as if she\u2019s been here with me, sharing my life experiences all this time.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
