CAA \u2014 the Hollywood agency that reps A-listers like Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman and George Clooney \u2014 has ended a 20-month standoff with the Writers Guild of America that will enable it to once again represent screenwriters.<\/p>\n

Both sides said they have dropped legal claims that stemmed from the WGA\u2019s directive to thousands of Hollywood scribes \u2014 from Shonda Rimes and Tina Fey to Seth MacFarlane and Lena Waithe \u2014 to fire their agents over how the agencies compensate them.<\/p>\n

CAA joins all of Hollywood\u2019s top agencies \u2014 apart from Ari Emanuel\u2019s WME \u2014 in signing an updated deal over \u201cpackaging,\u201d \u00a0a practice that allows production companies to pay talent agencies a fee to bundle their talent together for a film or TV series<\/a>. The concern is that agencies that accept packaging fees have an incentive to pay the talent they represent less so they can keep a larger share for themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cCAA and the WGA have concluded and signed a franchise agreement confirming CAA can resume representing writers and continue the important work of helping them realize their ambitions,\u201d a CAA rep said late Wednesday. \u201cWe end this year of unprecedented global challenges with the optimism and energy that today\u2019s news<\/a> brings, starting now, and for the years ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guild confirmed the deal to members from its agency negotiating committee in a note, saying \u201cCAA may once again represent Guild members for covered writing services.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agreement also limits agencies to a 20-percent ownership stake in affiliated production companies. CAA owns a stake in affiliate production company, Wiip, which is behind App<\/a>le TV+\u2019s \u201cDickinson,\u201d starring Hailee Steinfeld and \u201cQueen America,\u201d a Facebook<\/a> Watch series that starred Catherine Zeta Jones.<\/p>\n

The guild revealed\u00a0a side letter<\/a>\u00a0agreement with CAA on its website that states that the agency and its private equity owner TPG will cut its stake in Wiip to 20 percent and will need to provide evidence of the sale. The timeline for the divestiture wasn\u2019t disclosed.<\/p>\n

The guild had emphasized throughout the talks that it would only sign a deal with agencies that adhere to a 20-percent ownership cap in affiliated production companies. With the exception of CAA and WME, most agencies do not have affiliated production arms. <\/p>\n

A major holdout is Endeavor Content, the affiliate production company owned by WME-parent Endeavor. The company, which is behind the critically acclaimed \u201cLa La Land,\u201d and \u201cThe Young Pope,\u201d as well as new release \u201cBill & Ted Face the Music,\u201d is much larger than Wiip and more prolific.<\/p>\n

A source put the production company\u2019s value at north of $700 million, and said that Endeavor will likely have to sell a portion of the company in order to comply with WGA\u2019s rules. <\/p>\n

A WME spokeswoman did not address that but instead expressed her firm\u2019s willingness to re-engage with the guild.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have reached out to the Guild to learn more about the specific terms of their agreement with CAA, but we think this news is a positive development and suggests a path forward for WME to reach an agreement as well,\u201d the rep said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
