WASHINGTON \u2014 Joe Biden has chosen Democratic Rep. Deb Haaland to serve as his secretary of the interior.<\/p>\n

The New Mexico congresswoman, 60, is a member of the Laguna Pueblo\u00a0people and if confirmed, would be the first Native American cabinet secretary, in charge of managing the nation\u2019s vast natural resources and tribal and federal lands.<\/p>\n

Biden pledged to create the most diverse cabinet in the nation\u2019s history but progressives have been frustrated by the former veep\u2019s stacking of Obama-era officials like John Kerry and Susan Rice in key roles.<\/p>\n

The app<\/a>ointment of Haaland to the top interior role follows intense lobbying from allies like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D. Calif) and climate change groups who wanted to see a climate advocate in the cabinet post.<\/p>\n

Haaland was one of the first Native American women to be elected to Congress in 2019 and serves as vice chair\u00a0of the House Natural Resources Committee.<\/p>\n

Her appointment is expected to ease tensions with the nation\u2019s 1.9 million Native Americans who live on tribal lands managed by the Department of Interior.<\/p>\n

Haaland will also be in charge of making good on Biden\u2019s promises to reduce the nations\u2019 reliance on fossil fuels and create more renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Washington Post<\/a>, Haaland sought to pre-emptively downplay concerns about her jobs record.<\/p>\n

\u201cI come from New Mexico. It\u2019s a big gas and oil state. And I care about every single job,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

In another interview with NPR, Haaland said her appointment would go a long way toward easing the fraught relationship between the nation\u2019s first people and the department which saw tribes pushed off their ancestral land.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means a lot to a group of people who have been here since time immemorial to know that they\u2019re truly being represented. I think it would really change the way people see our federal government,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing able to listen, being able to move issues forward, bringing people to the table \u2014 I think that would make a huge difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Biden announced former South Bend, Ind. mayor Pete Buttigieg would serve as his transportation secretary, making him the second-openly gay cabinet member in US history after Trump\u2019s choice of Ric Grenell as acting director of National Intelligence earlier this year.<\/p>\n
