Disney is planning on adapting Megan Whalen Turner<\/strong>\u2018s YA fantasy novel\u00a0The Thief<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for Disney+. It\u2019s not entirely clear if this is going to be a film or a TV show, but in either case, Disney\u2019s live-action team is working on the adaptation, with a script<\/a> from screenwriter Brian Duffield<\/strong> (The Divergent Series<\/a>: Insurgent<\/em>, Love and Monsters<\/em>). The book is the first in a series, and tells the story of a thief sprung from prison to search for a \u201clegendary object.\u201d<\/p>\n

THR<\/a> has the scoop that\u00a0The Thief<\/em> is being adapted for Disney+, but they don\u2019t confirm if it\u2019s a TV show or a film. If I had to guess \u2013 and I guess I do, since I\u2019m the one writing this \u2013 I\u2019d say it\u2019s probably a movie, since the writer they brought in, Brian Duffield, seems to mostly write scripts for films. In any case, since\u00a0The Thief<\/em> is the first in a series of books, it\u2019s safe to say that Disney wants to create some sort of franchise here.
\nPublished in 1996,\u00a0Megan Whalen Turner\u2019s book follows\u00a0Eugenides (Gen for short), a thief who claims he can steal anything. As the official synopsis states: \u201cWhen his boasting lands him in prison and the king\u2019s magus invites him on a quest to steal a legendary object, he\u2019s in no position to refuse. The magus thinks he has the right tool for the job, but Gen has plans of his own.\u201d The book was followed by five sequels:\u00a0The Queen of Attolia<\/em>,\u00a0The King of Attolia<\/em>,\u00a0A Conspiracy of Kings,\u00a0Thick as Thieves<\/em>, and\u00a0Return of the Thief<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As the book jacket for a later edition of\u00a0The Thief<\/em>\u00a0states:<\/p>\n

This first book in series introduces one of the most charismatic and incorrigible characters of fiction, Eugenides the thief. If there\u2019s one thing kids love, it\u2019s political machinations and intrigue! The fact that there\u2019s a whole series of books here gives Disney room to launch a franchise, be it in the form of a TV show or a series of films. Jim Whitaker, a Disney producer with credits that include\u00a0Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Pete\u2019s Dragon,<\/em>\u00a0is on board to produce the adaptation.<\/p>\n
