\n WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump on Tuesday addressed remarks he made during an Oklahoma rally about directing staff to slow down COVID-19 testing \u2014 telling reporters he wasn\u2019t joking while affirming that the US has the best testing in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t kid. We have got the greatest testing program anywhere in the world,\u201d Trump told reporters at the White House on his way to Phoenix, Ariz., when asked about the Tulsa comments, which were condemned by Democrats including Joe Biden.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe test better than anybody in the world. Our tests are the best in the world and we have the most of them,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s aides have spent the past two days insisting the remarks made at his Saturday rally in Tulsa were sarcastic and meant to highlight the fact that the US has tested more people than any other country.<\/p>\n

His political opponents jumped on the tongue-in-cheek comments, calling them \u201coutrageous\u201d even as the Trump campaign explained he was \u201cobviously kidding\u201d about directing staff to slow the rate of COVID-19 tests.<\/p>\n

Members of the White House coronavirus task force on Tuesday including Drs. Robert Redfield and Anthony Fauci told Congress that they had received no such request to slow down testing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI as a member of the task force and my colleagues on the task force to my knowledge \u2014 I know for sure \u2014but to my knowledge, none of us have ever been told to slow down on testing. That just is a fact,\u201d Fauci answered when asked about any testing slowdown at a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIn fact, we will be doing more testing, as you\u2019ve heard from Admiral Giroir,\u201d he said. \u201cSo it\u2019s the opposite, we\u2019re going to be doing more testing, not less.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump on Tuesday called testing a \u201cdouble-edged sword\u201d and again repeated his remarks that more testing would lead to greater confirmed cases of COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy having more tests, we find more cases,\u201d he said, adding the US had performed more than 25 million tests.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, we test, we\u2019re going to have more cases. By having more cases it sounds bad but actually what it is we\u2019re finding people \u2014 many of those people aren\u2019t sick or very little, they may be young people,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cTesting is a double-edged sword. In one way it tells you you have cases, in another way you find out where the cases are and you do a good job,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump has claimed that because the US is doing \u201ctoo good\u201d of a job screening for the virus, the outbreak app<\/a>ears worse than in other countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have tested now 25 million people. It is probably 20 million people more than anybody else,\u201d Trump told the crowd at his Tulsa rally.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s the bad part. When you test to that extent, you are going to find more people, find more cases. So I said to my people, \u2018Slow the testing down please.\u2019 They test and they test,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro\u00a0said the remark \u201cwas tongue in cheek\u201d, while press secretary Kayleigh McEnany also insisted the comment was meant to deride the media<\/a> for not understanding that more testing leads to more cases.<\/p>\n

The US has performed the most coronavirus tests, according to data from John Hopkins University, but the US daily per-capita rate of testing lags behind countries such as Russia and Australia.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks come amid a spike in cases across the country as states begin reopening \u2014 with Florida last week reporting its\u00a0largest single-day spike in cases since the pandemic started.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
