\n Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday blamed sick nursing home staffers for infecting residents at the facilities \u2014 and doubled down on a controversial state order barring the facilities from turning away coronavirus-positive patients, saying, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it wasn\u2019t a mistake because \u2026 you didn\u2019t want to leave a senior citizen in the hospital for two weeks if you didn\u2019t need to be in a hospital bed for two weeks,\u201d Cuomo said on MSNBC of his Health Department\u2019s widely scrutinized March 25 mandate, which may have fueled more than 6,000 confirmed and presumed COVID-19 deaths in New York.<\/p>\n

The governor added, \u201cBy the time a person was transferred after nine or 10 days, they were no longer contagious and what all the data says is, the reason you had infections in nursing homes were because the staff brought in the infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look at the communities that had the high infection rate overall \u2014 those were the communities that had a high infection rate \u2014 so it is that the staff got infected. They came to work and they brought in the infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cuomo, who has in the past few weeks blamed party politics for criticism of his handling of the nursing homes during the pandemic \u2014 and even the New York Post for exposing the scandalous directive \u2014 pointed to how the state recently required coronavirus testing for all nursing home staff twice a week.<\/p>\n

That mandate was revised on June 10, following industry pressure and Post reports that nursing homes were experiencing significant delays in receiving staff tests \u2014 results or not getting them at all \u2014 and now facilities only have to test staff once a week if their county has entered Phase Two of the Empire State\u2019s reopening plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s very hard,\u201d Cuomo insisted Tuesday. \u201cAll you need is one person \u2014 an air conditioning repair man, a delivery person and once that virus gets in the nursing home it\u2019s fire through dry grass.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where this virus preys,\u201d Cuomo said, referring to nursing homes. \u201cBut in terms of learning lessons, look there\u2019s gonna\u2019 be books written on lessons learned.\u201d<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0the state Health Department allowed nurses and other staff who tested positive,\u00a0but were asymptomatic,\u00a0for the coronavirus to continue treating COVID-19 patients at nursing homes\u00a0until the end of April.<\/p>\n

The DOH didn\u2019t reverse that order until The Post exclusively reported sick staffers were permitted to work and treat residents at an upstate nursing home where more than a dozen died following an outbreak.<\/p>\n

Staff must quarantine\u00a0at home for 14 days before returning to work, per the edited state guidance issued April 29.<\/p>\n

Cuomo\u00a0had previously\u00a0insisted that \u201cit\u2019s not our job\u201d to provide coronavirus-ravaged nursing homes with personal protective equipment.<\/p>\n

In May, Cuomo partially reversed the March 25 state order, mandating that patients in New York hospitals must now test negative for the coronavirus before they can be discharged to nursing homes.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
