Police Commissioner Dermot Shea knows what he wants under his tree this Christmas: for New York to \u201cget serious about guns.\u201d He\u2019s not the only one with that wish.<\/p>\n

In a meeting Thursday with The Post\u2019s Editorial Board, Shea pleaded for a tougher app<\/a>roach to getting illegal guns off the streets, whether through tweaks to current law or by bolstering the way the laws are carried out by prosecutors, judges, parole officers and the entire criminal-justice system.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll ask for one thing under the Christmas tree,\u201d says Shea. \u201cWe need to get serious about guns.\u201d The NYPD devotes \u201cmuch\u201d of its resources toward that, but \u201cwe need help.\u201d<\/p>\n

You bet they do: Violent crime is through the roof, with shootings running at twice last year\u2019s rate and murders up almost 40 percent. Car thefts and burglaries are spiking, too.<\/p>\n

The biggest problem? \u201cGang members with guns,\u201d says Shea, usually between the ages of 14 and 30. \u201cIf we focus on guns, we can keep incarceration down\u201d and \u201cimprove public safety.\u201d And though he believes a full-scale reopening of the court system post-COVID will help lock up bad guys and push down violence, cops will \u201cstill need help\u201d even after the pandemic ends<\/p>\n

Shea\u2019s right: Too many violent, young men are carrying firearms out on the streets \u2014 walking free, when they should be behind bars. <\/p>\n

And the commish knows why: New York\u2019s supposedly tough gun laws are effectively \u201cfake,\u201d because criminals caught with firearms are let off easy. <\/p>\n

\u201cSupervised release,\u201d where suspects are freed and, theoretically, closely monitored, is just a \u201cbuzzword that the advocates insert, with no real repercussions,\u201d he argues. The supervision is a joke, and data showing that it works \u201cdoesn\u2019t exist.\u201d <\/p>\n

Paroled convicts who don\u2019t show up for meetings or otherwise violate the terms of their release aren\u2019t immedia<\/a>tely locked up again but given endless second chances instead. <\/p>\n

The still-botched no-bail law has meant even more suspects roaming free \u2014 and more potential witnesses staying quiet because it also ensures defense lawyers quickly get personal info on anyone helping a prosecution.<\/p>\n

Shea blasts \u201cprosecutors\u201d and \u201cjudges,\u201d in particular, for their leniency toward violent offenders: \u201cWe\u2019re one part of the criminal-justice system,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re not the jury. We\u2019re not the prosecutors. We\u2019re not the system that puts ankle bracelets on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gotham\u2019s top cop cites other issues that compound the problem. #DefundThePolice cuts to the NYPD budget socked overtime, which left fewer cops patrolling high-crime neighborhoods. The cuts also meant the cancellation of a new class of recruits. Bottom line: The department now has nearly 3,000 fewer officers than last year.<\/p>\n

Shea might not get his wish in time for Christmas, but the city can <\/em>get \u201cserious\u201d about guns and violent crime, mostly by installing better leaders \u2014 tougher prosecutors, judges, and leaders from Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio on down. And it can start as early as next year\u2019s citywide elections.\n <\/div>\n
