{"id":136682,"date":"2020-12-18T18:10:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-18T15:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/ny-times-admits-caliphate-podcast-based-on-botched-reporting\/"},"modified":"2020-12-18T18:10:00","modified_gmt":"2020-12-18T15:10:00","slug":"ny-times-admits-caliphate-podcast-based-on-botched-reporting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/ny-times-admits-caliphate-podcast-based-on-botched-reporting\/","title":{"rendered":"#NY Times admits &#8216;Caliphate&#8217; podcast based on botched reporting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NY Times admits &#8216;Caliphate&#8217; podcast based on botched reporting<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The New York Times\u2019 Pulitzer Prize-nominated podcast about ISIS was an \u201cinstitutional failure\u201d that included shoddy reporting based off interviews with a \u201ccon artist,\u201d executive editor Dean Baquet said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In a blistering editor\u2019s note, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper said the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> \u201cCaliphate\u201d blew its journalistic standards.<\/p>\n<p>An internal investigation into the 12-part series was launched after the main subject, Shehroze Chaudhry, was arrested in late September in Canada on charges he lied about his role in ISIS activity in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Chaudhry had told the Times that he participated in executions carried out by the terror group.<\/p>\n<p>But the Times \u201cfound a history of misrepresentations by Mr. Chaudhry and no corroboration that he committed the atrocities he described in the \u2018Caliphate\u2019 podcast,\u201d the paper said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/20\/podcasts\/caliphate-transcript-prologue-the-mission.html\">in an editors\u2019 note added Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result, The Times has concluded that the episodes of \u2018Caliphate\u2019 that presented Mr. Chaudhry\u2019s claims did not meet our standards for accuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The note highlighted two main issues \u2014 that an editor with experience in the subject of terrorism was not assigned to keep a close eye on the series and that reporters \u201cshould have pressed harder to verify Chaudhry\u2019s claims before deciding to place so much emphasis on one individual\u2019s account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also clear that elements of the original fact-checking process were not sufficiently rigorous: Times journalists were too credulous about the verification steps that were undertaken and dismissive of the lack of corroboration of essential aspects of Mr. Chaudhry\u2019s account,\u201d the Times said.<\/p>\n<p>Baquet spoke about the bungle on the Times\u2019 podcast \u201cThe Daily,\u201d telling host Michael Barbaro that there was a possibility that Chaudhry had \u201cduped\u201d the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, there was a well-known reporter involved in it \u2014 Rukmini Callimachi,\u201d Baquet said in the Friday episode. \u201cBut this failing isn\u2019t about any one reporter. She declined to comment to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Baquet said she\u2019s staying on but will be taking on a new beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe and I are discussing possibilities,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s hard to continue covering terrorism after what happened with this story.
