“#Ex-Goldman Sachs exec warns of wealth gap ‘revolution’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

One Wall Street power player is urging his fellow one-percenters to help close the growing wealth gap \u2014 or risk staring down pitchforks and guillotines.<\/p>\n

Ex-Goldman Sachs chief financial officer Marty Chavez sounded off on income inequality during an interview with financial news<\/a> site The Business of Business on Wednesday, while also taking a shot at congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for flaming the class-war fires.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want the inequality to become so extreme that it leads to a revolution,\u201d Chavez said. \u201cSo, you ought to be prepared to pay to decrease that probability of that happ<\/a>ening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chavez said he supports doing this through a universal basic income, which proposes set government payments to all US adults to keep people out of poverty and help fund small businesses and innovation. <\/p>\n

But while the 56-year-old ex-Goldman grandee, who is openly gay and a longtime Democratic party donor, is on board with UBI, he was critical of one of the party\u2019s most popular members.<\/p>\n

When asked about his thoughts on AOC\u2019s opinion that \u201cthere should be no billionaires in the US as long as there are poor families,\u201d Chavez chuckled audibly before throwing shade at the Queens congresswoman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not in AOC\u2019s camp, AT ALL,\u201d chortled Chavez. \u201cI didn\u2019t vote for her, I wouldn\u2019t vote for her. She\u2019s not saying anything that makes any sense to me. At the same time, I\u2019m a big proponent of universal basic income.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t an inevitable feature of capitalism that the inequality be as extreme as it\u2019s getting,\u201d mused Chavez. \u201cThere have been long periods of American history where there has been inequality, but it wasn\u2019t this kind of inequality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, data from the Pew Research Center recently showed that the income gap in the US was the highest of the world\u2019s seven wealthiest nations. That report was published in February, before the pandemic crushed the economy, leading the largest-ever increase in the US poverty rate.<\/p>\n

UBI, a platform of tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang\u2019s failed bid for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, would most likely be paid for via tax hikes to millionaires, including many of Chavez\u2019 former colleagues.<\/p>\n

Still, the star Goldmanite \u2014 who was considered a candidate for the CEO gig that eventually went to David Solomon \u2014 says he\u2019s not shy about selling his richest and most powerful pals on the idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what I say to friends you might call \u2018oligarchs\u2019,\u201d Chavez said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
